French and American FT-17
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This is the French FT17 Renault LIGHT TANK

This is the American M1917 6 Ton LIGHT TANK

Both of these are in the Patton Museum. Those photos are a little out of date.

They have 2004 stamped on them. The Museum has been undergoing upgrades for the past several years. The display areas that those tanks are located have been completed.

I have a little better pic of that one in Bucharest, Romania in my thread on that visit a couple of pages back on this DG that you may use if you wish.

Also, I've got one of the one in the Patton Museum from this year and from 1971 out front (same vehicle) that I can post for you later. Just arrived in Europe and don't have access to my files here.

Dontos posted that one of the vehicles at Knox is a USA M1917 6 ton.

Are FT-17s and the M1917 the same type with just different labels or are they different vehicles?

Confuzed about WW I AFVs.

Roy,
If I remember correctly, the US model was made using standard (SAE) fittings where the French model was in metric. The logic was it was simpler for US manufacturers to mass produce it that way. (@#$% metric system). And to this day we still cling to our beloved Standard system.

So there is something I don't understand. The Patton Museum has a FT-17 since 1971. This museum received 2 more FT-17 (more or less wrecks) from Afghanistan, and now, only 2 are exposed. What happened to the 3dr one?

I think that I'll do a survining FT-17 PDF file too.. Wink

I believe the easy way to tell the difference is the American version has the exhaust on the left hand side, the french have the exhaust on the right hand side...plus if its WWI combat footage its a French tank as I don't believe any of the American made tanks made it to France in time. please correct if you don't agree....sorry i don't have pics of the other sides
