I'll put a post up on the Rise Of Flight forum asking if Windows XP with 3MB RAM and the free storage space defined above meets the current minimum requirements of the game, and what the fix might be for a corrupt download. Might as well get a straight answer. XP won't see more than 3MB RAM so adding memory won't do.

Note: On April 14 of next year (2014) Windows XP goes End Of Life and no more security updates for it...which means inevitable virus infection since it will be a prime target for hackers (opinions vary on this but I have not seen a coherent argument why that won't be the case).

For tonight...yes I do have the Gotha, and can fly it pretty well, and it'll certainly accommodate a front and rear gunner, I have upgraded weapons for that too. Twisted Evil

I just got home and dinner is getting prepared as I type this - at 9:00PM Eastern time I'll be on the New Wings Basic Training server at the "Ring Of Fire" airfield, practicing touch-n-goes. Been a long week and might have some whiskey by my side though. See ya then if ya make it!

Also will be on teamspeak 3 if you're so inclined...IP is 70.42.74.44, and the room is the "Basic Training".

*sigh* Ascout has an impressive array of virtues (some would say too many to list), but "embrace of change" is, alas, not one of them. Rolling Eyes

I got my first supercomputer in '03, and my current one in '07 (it's service life prolonged by a generous and timely interpretation of the Gateway warranty that gussied up my vid card and saw some more RAM installed before return). I suppose 5-6 years is pretty decent service and I may have to contemplate an upgrade in the foreseeable future so I can advance beyond Pac-Man. (It runs FSX full tilt fine, but I preferred addon development to pretty water effects and deleted it).

Maybe I'll sell what remains of my soul for a killer rig in '13.

I'm still with XP and 4 gigs of ram (only 3 recognized) and run ROF fine.

I'm also thinking I had a problem with the demo when I first downloaded it, same problem you're having with the compressed file not opening and had to download a second time to get it to work. If you haven't already, try downloading it again and see what happens.

Well that's good news! Hell if nothing else I can mail a DVD with the non-corrupt installer!

By the way it was GOOD to have a fellow Sau in the skies again!

If you're uop for action tonight, now that you have more of a feel for things, we can do the two-seater thing on the wargrounds server. and fly across the mud to stir up some trouble!

Ascout: I'm downloading the latest version (1.0.2.8b) of the free client and once I verify it by unzipping I'll burn it to DVD and pop it in the mail. I'l have to hunt for that North Carolina address in my PM box but a refresher wouldn't hurt.

I have found that using "Free Download Manager" helps keep the larger downloads from corrupting. It will give you Pause - Resume, keep your connection up, and verify download integrity much like a BitTorrent. I have yet to get a corrupted download when I have used it on a large download.

Free Download Manager: www.freedownloadmanager.org/

If it works it will save you the cost of mailing the DVD.

About that...it's actually possible to shoot tails and other important components (including the pilot) from the gunner positions. Sadly, because anyone with the free demo can join online and jump in a game, occasionally there are incidents where bomber or observation pilots have some unknown person (kid) jump in their backseat during mid-flight and start shooting them in the head, engine or wings. The pilot can "lock out" the gunner position so no one can jump in it and it's controlled by an AI gunner only. After having that happen to me after spending 20 minutes climbing to altitude and sneaking my way across enemy lines for a bombing run, it's part of my preflight checklist to lock the gunner slot. Most other multi-seat pilots do the same.

So, don't be surprised if there are limited or no seats available when you jump in a game, and just send a chat message announcing your intention and most folks will let you in once they know you. The AI gunners can't shoot the broad side of a barn, so good human back-seat gunners are a highly prized commodity in the game and the guys who pair up as a pilot/gunner team in one plane can sometimes kick some serious butt. Wink

Be alert for ambitious Wing Commanders who hope to enhance their prospects for accelerated advancement to STAB by ensuring that the "Boss Hawg" falls victim to *cough, cough* enemy fire. Be especially on the lookout for subordinates who've been observed honing their wing-walking skillz. Wink

Far less than what I paid.

Headin' online Dan, if you're around I'll be on the NW Wargrounds server in a two-seater!

It was nice to fly with you last night Stoopy even though anything that could go wrong did, wish I could control the turret guns with my joystick and I wish the sim was full screen for me.Tried to buy the 8$ download from Amazon that Slowhand posted but they don't sell to Canada.I don't have my keycode from the demo so I am worried that it might be a problem when I buy the full game.anyhow I have some time again tonight to work on things and will try to make some progress,I'll check in latter to see if you are playing tonight.

Tonight is a "school night" for me, I have to get up early and go crack the whip at work. I will be in the air soon, Wednesday night for sure on the Basic Training server to do some group flight stuff & formation practice... it's always a good time if you can make it. We can go beat up some AI aircraft too.

It was GREAT to get in the air with you Dan, regardless of how things panned out! That was the first time I've never been able to make it back to home base safely in any single mission of the night....a very tough crowd to be sure, but still had a good time!

We got beat up some but you showed you have what it takes to be the last man standing, literally!

But we got through to the target every time at least, and pulverized the snot out of 'em once we got there!

This explains why they were so angry with us!! Twisted Evil
