Spinal Tap was a made up band for one of the Rocky horor movies. And i think it made the real band really mad Mr. Green

Spinal Tap

LOL...close but not exactly.....in all actuality, Spinal Tap is a made-up band, but for their own movie - a Rob Reiner classic called "This is Spinal Tap". And if there was another band called "Spinal Tap" it was completely coincidental. It's the story - actually fake documentary (or 'Rockumentary', if you will) of a hard-working English rock band with roots back into the same period as the Beatles. Its absolutely hilarious, especially for anyone who's ever been in a band and has seen all the things that can and will go wrong!

In fact, the actors (Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer) are pretty talented musicians and at about the same time as the movie was out, they booked some club dates around the LA area and actually played live gigs as... Spinal Tap! I mean these guys had stones to go out into the down-and-dirty LA rock club scene!! I guess they wanted to make sure they weren't thought of as "Monkees" (even though some of the Monkees did write and play some damn great stuff too, once they made a stand). Heck, they even released a "black album" with songs from the movie, and it's outrageously good stuff in it's own right with titles like "Sex Farm Woman", "Big Bottom", the rock-opera-like "Stonehenge" and the hilarious "Gimme Some Money". Yeah, if you haven't guessed I have the VHS, DVD and the LP!

One of the biggest laughs was when Guitar Player magazine ran an "interview" with lead Spinal Tap guitarist "Nigel Tufnel" who is really actor/guitarist Michael McKean ......it was friggin' GREAT!!!! I think ol' Nigel still made a few cameo appearances in that mag for a while....a hilarious character.

I think Torq's humor was a little oblique maybe.....but nevertheless a good joke I thought!

I supprised to see a band of Metallica's Ilk only mentioned once ... The sustaining power of the band , with all the losses ( Cliff Burton R>I>P '86 ) and countless other trauma's and they are still able to sell out a football arena worldwide.

My top pick's would have to be ...

1. "The King" Elvis Presly
2. Beetles
3. Stevie Ray Vaughn
4. The Man in black - Mr Cash
5. Metallica
6. Pink Floyd ( with roger waters )
7. Eagles
8. Rolling Stones <--- not a real fan , but have to have somthing after 40 years.
9. GnR <--- moved down 3 spot's due to Axel Rose being a dink ...
10. Nirvana < --- can never know the full effect of the music , Just have to imagine what he could have been capable of once his talent matured ...

Now this list is my opinion of relavence to path's being blazed for future generation's ... If you wanna talk about personal preferance's , well there is an entirly seperate list.

Post subject: Re: Boys, who are the top 10 rock

I was emotionally disturbed for months after Spinal Tap lost their drummer in a "freak gardening accident".

My personal preferences (C'mon Snowy, get in there)
1) AC/DC - Bon Scott singing (Saw 'em in Skindles Motel in Maidenhead UK 1975. Jenny Darren supported and there weren't more than 200 people in the audience. It was PACKED. I still claim to be the 1st person in the UK to smack Angus's azz as Bon carried him 'walkabout' on his shoulders).
2) Pink Floyd
3) Aerosmith
4) Rolling Stones
5) Journey
6) Queen
7) Nightranger
Cool Thin Lizzy
9) Jeff Healey / Gary Moore /Steve Stevens (my 3 favourite guitarists and my way of getting extra votes in )
10) Extreme

11) The current AC/DC line up (Bon may be gone, but they still got Angus)

Yep Shades, I seen AC/DC and they did the same performance in Chicago. I thought going out in the audience on shoulders was really unique... Wink

But then again, I've seen lot of concerts and the range is bizarre. How bout Englebert Humberdink/Tom Jones all the way to Alice Cooper/AC/DC...lol

Still, I'm a blues/southern rock/latin/jazz/rock guy and have seen the likes of Charlie Daniels, Marshal Tucker, BB King, Santana, Paco DeLucia, Jean Luc Ponty...etc... The list goes on and I've enjoyed them all for one reason or another. To make a list starting with the best to worst would be too hard as I liked all of them for one reason or another.

Impossible to list a top ten. Just wanted to list the top ten bands that get me in the mood - depending on whatever that mood is at the time.

The Who - John Entwistle was the man.
Led Zeppelin
Aerosmith
Van Halen (D.L.R)
Steely Dan - sorry....I love Steely Dan
Rolling Stones
not a real fan , but have to have somthing after 40 years
....ditto
Marshall Tucker Band - seen 'em 11 times and love 'em. God Bless the Caldwell's
The Allman Brothers Band - Nothing better than "peaking" at the Beacon
Steve Miller Band- ever hear a bad Steve Miller song?

The Good Rats - My ALL time favorite band - The worlds most famous unknown band! Best drummer that ever lived is Joe Franco and YES his sticks are in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.

1978
www.goodrats.com/

....and I must add watching Warren Zevon puke all over himself and pass out on his piano should at least give him a mention 8). God rest his soul...

@ Combat / Bushy - Saw AC/DC support The Who @ Wembley Stadium, Saturday 18th August 1979 (with the Stranglers and Nils Loffgren).

@ Mrdc - Was in a pub in Dorset with Ian Gillan once after lockout when he suddenly jumped up and dragged us out to his Rolls, careering up to the cliffs saying, "Better reception; I'm supposed to be on Radio 1 being interviewed live by John Peel tonight and I want to hear how he gets out of it."
lololol

WOW Shades!! You were in a pub?...lol

I don't remember the exact year I seen AC/DC, but they were the headliner. I do remember they played at the Rosamont Horizon, a big event building near Chicago.. Wink

I would have liked to seen the "Who" as I was a teen when they hit it big in the US. Some bands I really regret not seeing was Lynyard Skynard and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Sad part is, I had a chance to see them but didn't go because of various reasons.

Of the bands I did see, there were a couple that really surprised me. I wasn't/didn't anticipate them being as good as they were. Who were they? They were two Black bands, the Temptations and O Jays. Both of those bands impressed me with the way they interacted with the crowd...simply outstanding and worth the time to see them. Wink Oh, about the O Jays, one of the singers had a diamond ring so big, it looked like a sealed beam headlight from a car!...lol When the light hit it the right way, the reflection was like those old disco balls...lol

Post subject: Re: Boys, who are the top 10 rock 'n roll bands of all time?

Ok, In a personal list .( not going to name them all cause some of my pick's people will point and laugh at me )

1. Metallica <---- Used to listen to the Kill'm All CD in the locker room before a fight ... Nothing get's one pumped up more IMO.
2. Stevie Ray Vaughn <---- I mean com'on ! It's Stevie !!!
3. Aerosmith <---- 'nuff said ...
4. Pink Floyd <---- Where oh where did our roger go ... Who knew there could be so many song's about heroin ? Razz
5. B.B. King <---- WoOt !!
6. Led Zeppelin <---- Musical genius , worth the soul they sold ... lol
7. Gun's N' Roses <---- Some wonder if GNR would have been as good without Axel screwing everything up ... NO ! Just look at that Turd called "Velvet Revolver" ( Member's of original GnR san's Axel replaced by Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilot's. )
8. Beatles <---- Where do i start ?
9. Eric Clpton / Cream <---- Another soul was sold ... Thank you for that Eric !
10. Jimmi Hendrix <---- Maybe i like this more from a player's standpoint ... None the less , i like it !

Honorable Mention's
( in no apparent order , *AKA*... Thing's in my CD player on Random )

Nirvana
AC/DC
Thin Lizzy
Most anything Classical

Now i do listen to more modern music at work ... most are good , some are bad .... But no way compare to the classic's i listen to on " Me Time "

nice one guys.
Bushy, can't remember how many times I've seen AC/DC but only the ones with Bon count.
They just haven't been the same since he passed.
I know what you mean about the OJays & The Temptations.
I was very fortunate to be able to see The Godfather (James Brown) this Summer and was very susprised and impressed with his whole show; Him, his band, his vocalists and his guests.

I also sympathise with you for not going to see those bands when you had the chance. If it's any consolation, I was actually present at the following gigs and for one reason or another never managed to see or hear the bands live;
Thin Lizzy - and Lynott even managed my band until his death! Geeze!
David Bowie
Queen - Seen them with Paul Rodgers last Spring (which was better than I expected), but I was actually at a Freddy Mercury line up in the '80's and still never saw them.
Sad

First time I saw the The Who was at Shea Stadium back in the early 80's I think. The Clash warmed them up and me and a few friends were lucky not to get trampled up front by the stage. Had a wine sack filled with Boones Farm Strawberry and something else in my other pocket! lol!

The last time I saw The Who was like two years ago at Madison Square Garden sitting in a corporate suite drinking Fosters....guess who was warming them up??...Robert Plant!!!!!! Also Ringo Star's kid was their drummer. Was amazing how friggin good they sounded! Incredibly loud. Townsend was still doing windmills and jumping around like a kid!

@ Combat / Bushy - Saw AC/DC support The Who @ Wembley Stadium, Saturday 18th August 1979 (with the Stranglers and Nils Loffgren).

Seeing AC/DC is something I've never had the chance to do. Would have been great to see them as a warm up for The Who though! Wow!

Speaking of Skynard and TheWho warm up bands....Didn't Skynard warm them up for a while?

And I have to say. One of THE best shows I have ever been to in my life was Elton John at Madison Square Garden ...was like 1984 or 1985 or something. That was by far one of my most memorable concerts without a doubt.
