M48A3 Question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M48A3 Question

I am tracking three M48A3's in the US,

Anniston Army Depot
Fort Riley Kansas
Fort Knox (Eventually Fort Benning)

I also have not seen recent proof that the one at Anniston is still there. My question is, are there any other surviving M48A3's in the US ????

Joe,

I have seen photos of an M48A3 at a USMC base in the desert, Barstow or Twentynine Palms. Itn the photo it looked to be the "model B" version and was painted in MERDC desert colors.

The M48A5 program was so energetic that the M48A3 is a rare beastie. I think there are some in Viet Nam museums. Even the basic M48A1 is not common due to the M48A5 program. THen the A5s were obsoleted and made into reefs, so even the M48A5 isn't easy to find.

Good luck on your quest.

I think I may know where the one is at Anniston. The problem there was no photos are allowed. I'll have to look at Google later. If you ever go there I'll make a map and show you where the Center for Military History has their stuff.

Looking at the rear deck that looks like an old M48A1 (no IR hood and ducting)

Unusual to see one with the angled front mudguards rather than the A1 curved front mudguards - must be another bitsa tank Smile

Still anyone know where its located?

I forgot about the A3 at the "Stumps"

M48A3 29 Palms

My question was leading up to this,

M48A3

Was sent this picture by a friend, located on a range at Fort Benning. Appears to be a former moving target vehicle for inert munitions. Notice the ad-hoc skirt mountings and steel plate on all the vision blocks. This rare beast would be a real good candidate for restoration. Would also be nice to trace her SN to find out if she served in Vietnam.

Jim, all I see are pictures of a "Wanna-Be" in an M48A1 Laughing .

Looks like bunches more of them "down range".

Now corrected - except in Bobs quote which shows an image of him when he was younger Wink

The Benning M48A3 is unusual - it has armored top-loading air cleaners. Never saw one on an A3 before.

Jim,

The tank you posted is the M48A3 at Fort Riley Kansas. Looks like they moved her to the CCTT/UCOFT training area, that's based on the buildings but it's been 8 years since I've been there. The big ID give away are the air cleaner units mounted on the sides, only A3's and A5's had them. 2-34 Armor was part of 1st BDE, 1st ID. Curious why they marked her as 1 AD, and if they were really going to be authentic they should've marked her as 4ID, 2-34 Armor, since that was who they belonged to when in Vietnam. (I'm a former 34th Armor Regiment trooper Wink )

Dennis,
Yes she is parked at Patton Range as a static display. I hope to document her next time I'm down there (near future).

Binder001,
Those air cleaner units are not armored, they are aluminum top loaders. Second version they came out with when they switched to the newer "V" style filters. Although those were not normal for A3's and didn't start showing up until the early A5's were made. I figure they were installed later in life when the original side loaders were no longer were serviceable. Much like they did with M60's.

I'm sure it's marked that way because it's sitting in fromt of the Bn. HQ of 2/34AR 1AD. At the time the picture was taken, and posted on KCAMPS's website by John Chavat, that's where they were located. I't's a new building down by MAITS. It's a pristine M48A3 MOD B. It use to be up on Custer Hill in front of 1/4 CAVs HQ building.
