Post subject: "In Harms Way"

While we're on the topic of 1945 in the Pacific I thought I'd post this plug for a great book one more time!

"In Harms Way"
by Doug Stanton

June 30, 1945. The story of the USS INDIANAPOLIS. Everyone knows the story that Quint told in JAWS. The ship that brought the "bomb" from the mainland to the island of Tinian where it was prepped and loaded for it's final destination. They left the top secret mission sailing for Leyte in radio silence only to be sunk. The survivors weren't found until the ship was finally found to be missing 5 days later. A total of 1,196 men were aboard, 317 survived, over 200 were killed by shark attacks as the men floated helplessly waiting for rescue. Even as the PBY's and rescue ships were plucking the men out of the water they watched in horror as the sharks took men in broad daylight!

Great book about the screwups, the mishaps, and the pure luck that brought the Indianapolis right in the crosshairs of the Japanese sub I-58. Commander Mochitsura Hashimoto's first and only sinking, and ironically what was one of the last offensive blows the Japanese were able to make during WW2. Excellent true story accounts by the survivors!

A good one!
