Preserved Tanks in Britain
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I've returned to this - I'll try to make sure I don't leave it so long in future.

I've written up the museum details and added its photos:

Location Profile 3130: Aldershot Military Museum

That means this museum is now completely finished, and I'm moving on.

Meanwhile I've learned that the Isle of Wight Museum is 'under new management' and is being reorganised (with the M47 and Comets already sold off) - has anyone heard anything more?

Post subject: Bulford Barracks Chieftain

I snapped the attached picture of a Chieftain with Stillbrew outside the gate at Bulford Barracks, Wiltshire in 2006. It was on Marlborough Road at Haig Road. I was enjoying a browse through Preserved Tanks in Britain the other day when I realized that I couldn't find it. Assuming that it had been moved I had a look on Google Maps and Bing Maps. Both show a blurry tank at the corner, although I don't know when these images date from, so it could still be gone. Neither have a street view available at this spot. Does anyone out there know the story on this one? Unfortunately, I did not think to take a front shot to get the number plate back then as I normally do now. Live and learn.

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in Britain

I've now written up the Firepower artillery museum at Woolwich - mostly with my photos, but with a fair smattering of Neil's too:

Location Profile 3250: Firepower Artillery Museum, Woolwich

I don't have much background history on the vehicles - just a smattering for the M110 and M109 - so anything you know would be appreciated. Similarly any current info on the whereabouts of the 2S1 would be useful.

Note to everyone, there are apparently plans to close the museum by 2017 so I recommend you get there quick! I imagine the vehicles will get dispersed - there's talk of them going to Larkhill, but there are a number of examples of the same vehicles already there.

Neil, I've used your Woolwich photos as follows:

Firepower Artillery Museum - Contributor Neil Baumgardner

and just a reminder you can see how I've used all your photos here.

Finally a general reminder for anyone who wants to see how this project is coming along:

I'm now gradually working through the vehicles at Shrivenham which I visited early last year, starting with the German vehicles.

To be honest, I think a Centurion crew would not feel out of place in a Challenger 2!

Trevor, as far as I was told by a Museum's volunteer, the 2S3 doesn't belongs to the Museum. It was put there by the real estate company who is rebuilding the area.
