Post subject: "Highway Patrol"

Howdy all! A story behind this one.....

For the last few months I've enjoyed the absolute pleasure to work with Mr. fr8ycat on a new helicopter he has created, a fabulously fun little Hughes OH-6A Cayuse, fondly known as a "Loach". It's the civilian version of his previous OH-6A military release, and for this release the paint skins chosen are from Loaches serving duty (mostly) in the field of law enforcement. He supplied me with some really interesting versions and we went from there. There is one other texture included, not shown in the video, which is distinctive in that it is a true veteran, having flown in Vietnam and still in service today...in the package, it's listed as the "Tropical helicopters" version, named for the company that was empoying it for sighseeing duties. It wears a Vietnam service ribbon just behind the copilot's door and this significant detail is certainly included in the texture.

Our own JG300-Ascout plays an important role in this too, as he got fr8ycat and I together for this project and also brought up this last OH-6A to fr8ycat's attention....Ascout, when you have time can you comment on this particalar Loach's history for my edification if nothing else? It was in a unit familiar to you, wasn't it?

Anyhoo, while doing the textures, ol' fr8ycat also sent me a really cool song that you'll hear, and it was an absolute natural to use in a video to accompany the release. Th'cat is still working on the flight model, ironing out some stuff and (rightfully) taking the time to make sure he's satisifed with it. Cool

In the meantime, the textures are done, (unless y'all spot something here) so I started to putter around with the video, havin' a good time raising some...well, you'll see. It's pretty much done now, I just have one small (but important) change to make yet but in the meantime, I'm completely happy with it, as are the other partners in crime it seems.....so it's just hard to sit on it any longer, and Com-Central naturally gets the exclusive preview of it, and it'll likely also get uploaded over at hovercontrol sometime later....just to help them poor guys see how it's done, y'know Wink !

The one change I need to make is add Com-C to the credits as sources for some of the...uhhh..."stuff" you'll see. I just totally went out to lunch on that, probably because to me, it's just only natural that anyone would come here first! Kinda like forgetting your home phone number... Rolling Eyes

And fr8ycat......good luck with that flight model and I hope this somewhat-earlier-than-planned preview here is cool with ya?!

Two file types for your viewing pleasure, both are about 20MB, roughly an 8-minute download or so on broadband:

...straight Windows Movie file for immediate viewing if the bandwidth allows:
216.176.86.154/jg300/H...Patrol.wmv

...and a ZIP file so it can be saved & played locally as usual:
216.176.86.154/jg300/H...Patrol.zip

Hope ya enjoy!

Kewl!!! Glad ya liked it!!!!

fr8ycat has some incredible taste in music it turns out..... I had no idea about the existence of Junior Brown and he sent me some more info about him. QUITE the amazing musician, does all the guitar and slide work and that weird axe you see him with in the credits is his own design. I went to his web site last night ( www.juniorbrown.com ) and listened to some sample tunes...."Stupid Blues" is just....oh man...sick.....great stuff, expanded my mind, man, and not just some country-western dude!!

Tell ya the truth if it had been any other song I'd have gone stark raving mad, having to listen to it thousands of times in the last coupla weeks!

You'll also find an old thread, somewhere, from months back where I was asking about world scenery files and the signs...now ya know why I asked, had that one planned from the get-go and had to wait until the very end to see it happen, heh heh. Anyone wants to know what file that is, just shout!

Stupid Blues sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughn, one of my favorite blues/guitar players...

Great site btw, and thanks for the heads up...:D I had a buddy that use to build his own guitars and I did the paint/refinish work on them . I've long since lost all the pics, but we had some pretty cool stuff. *Been 20+ years ago...lol*

Back to the AVI though...great job and kudos to all who worked on that project...:chug:

Yup, Kudos to fr8ycat, really, it's his baby......and I know he;s pounding his forehead on that flight model still, poor fella. So this is to help pick up his spirits.

Sounds like we need a guitar section here....I'd like to see some of your finishing work!

GOOD GOING GUYS!!
I'm going to make a copy and show it to Lt. Rowden and his crew of D.P.S 104, who cruise the skies over Odessa- Midland helping the ground units look for the bad guys.

BTW you need to have a paint of a Texas DPS chopper too.

That would be VERY COOL of you to do, 1Bullet!! Hopefully they'll like it. And hopefully, they'll appreciate the fun little joke at the end there, I mean it's hackey enough it shouldn't be taken seriously I'd think. Tried to compensate for it by showing 'em having plenty of nads pulling off the other stunts, heh heh!

I have(had) an old friend in the CHP back in SoCal, but haven't talked with him much since moving east unfortunately....might look him up and send a link just for fun...

If they have any pictures (preferably of an OH-6 or the later MD-500 model) that they'd like done, I can accomodate. Also making a paint kit ready for other repainters to use.

Oh, and like it says in the credits, please tell 'em thanks from us.

Thanks 1Bullet!

Actually, by sheer coincidence, turns out I've been there already, go figure! Does one of these look familiar?

www.alea.org/public/pi...police.htm

There's another site, can't think of the name right now, that fr8ycat steered me to, that has a full picture database of all helos, law enforcement or not. I did see an MD-500 from somewhere in Texas, I think Midland or thereabouts, that had a pretty striking "SHERIFF" logo in big embossed gold leaf on the side. Will find it and see what ya think.....

Ahh, here y'go, 1Bullet! Helispot.com -great place, tons of helos and pictures, and you can define your own search terms!

I was wrong about the one helo, it was for somewhere in Florida...I did find this OH-6A Cayuse used in Houston TX.

www.helispot.com/photos/03714.html

Seach for "Hughes 396/500" series to see helos like the one fr8ycat is making.....any paint scheme should transfer over fairly easily. You can probably do a search for any kind of Helo in Texas to see what else there is, but if it's from something like a Bell 206 or whatever, it's more challenging to apply the same paint job to a different airframe shape. Not that it can't be done.....

Here is my caption and link to pic at the VHPA Museum website:

Click on link for composite "then"(Vietnam) and "now" (or, recently, anyway) Image is dynamic, you can enlarge it....

www.vhpamuseum.org/air.../Loach.jpg

16161 as noted was assigned to my sister troop, C Troop, 2/17th Cav, 101st Abn. in "I" Corps, the northernmost military region in S. Vietnam.
A footnote to the caption is that on the occasion of Capt. Latimers' becoming KIA (struck by enemy fire through flank and shoulder) the crew chief, not a rated pilot, successfully flew the aircraft back to Phu Bai (C troops location) and landed where a rated pilot flew the mortally wounded Capt. over to the hospital, where he was pronounced DOA. Pilots frequently conducted a little unofficial on-the-job flight training for just such a contingency and I know it to have paid off more than once. I took the Vietnam pic a few months after the incident at Camp Eagle, 101st Abn. Div. base camp, on the Scabbard pad of 2/17th Cav while a D Troop aerorifle scout with that unit.

"Update on 16161 previously posted. OH-6 67-16161 as it appeared late Sept.'71 and as it is today. The two lower pictures are the most recent & current as of this writing, May 1, 2002. This is the aircraft in which Cpt. Wilbur Latimer was KIA 71Jan19 while serving with C troop, 2/17th Cav based in Phu Bai. The top photo was taken later that year, shortly after Typhoon Agnes/Supertyphoon Bess (Sept.18-21) struck, which accounts for damage to hangar roof in background. The aircraft is seen delivering a passenger to the 2/17th flight line at Camp Eagle...I can't ID the pilot, but believe the passenger may be Malcolm Lathers. Currently owned by Ronn Walker & Tropical Helicopter based at Leesburg Reg. Airport-Leesburg, FL. (see www.tropicalhelicopter.com) who shared the lower photos with me for the purpose of this posting. "

I'm in London-Heathrow at the moment and gotta' catch a flight to Barcelona...but suffice to say the video is beechin'...and I think I make out some 5 "Anomaly Airways" venues sprinkled about.... Mr. Green

BTW, if you follow the link below, you can read up on Capt. Latimer's uncle, Billy Pat Latimer, who served in CBI theater in WWII and "flew the hump". Facinating guy....

Dont know why but I just discovered the CC movie Link, LOL. As usual not paying attention.

Good job Stoopy. You've done Law Enforcement and my Flying Egg justice
with your paint and your video!

And some info. Along with Ascouts 16161/N90176 that served in C troop 2/17th Cav, Both the Gainsville police (white with blue stripes) and the Lane County Sheriffs (Green) paints are of Loachs that served in my fathers unit, D Troop 3/5th Cav in Vietnam and went on to serve the Police in there fight against "Domestic" Perps. At last check the Gainsville Loach is still serving, the Lane County Sheriffs Loach appears to have been replaced with a 500E, new fangled technology Rolling Eyes

Thank you sir!!! Like I said, I'm gonna post a link to a law enforcement forum out there at officer.com and see how it goes....they'll either love it or hate it, I'm sure! That additional info will come in handy.

Kinda makes me glad there were some scenes that stayed on the cutting room floor.....man it was HOT at The Pigsty the day I finished up the Lane County Sherrif version, but a test flight was called for, regardless.....
