Post subject: Com Central Sunday flights 2004-2005: a yearly balance

Do you remember when we took off on the maiden flights of this last tour of ours at Com Central? It was on November 21st 2004, and we started from an ice covered runway at Palmer Station, in Antarctica, on board of the beloved Howard 500.

Yesterday we landed at Unalaska, again surrounded by an all white landscape, with the Caravan Amphibian, for the last flight of the year. I think it's time to collect some data to get a perspective of what we did in more than one year, before undertaking new adventures.

We flew 53 flights, covering a distance of 19.907,9 nautical miles, for an approximate duration of 75 hours and 47 minutes - well, this is really quite approximate!

The full list of the planes we used, in order of appearance, is as follows:
Howard 500
Lockheed L-049 Constellation
Boeing 737-400
Boeing 737-700
Douglas DC-6B
Beechcraft D18S
Douglas DC-3
Cessna 208 Caravan Amphibian

To give you a graphic idea of what a feat was ours, here are screenshots taken with Google Earth - I had to split it in three Shocked

Of course, you should look at them from bottom to top, 'cause that was how we flew, but I had no heart to reverse the pics: it made me look at the world as if it were reversed, and made me feel sea-sick!

Case you want to experience just a portion of the thrill, and have Google Earth installed, here's a little kml file which will help you. Consider it includes all the airfields we touched. The very small zip package includes also a flight plan for FS9, case you're so bold to attemp the whole adventure in one leg Wink

Useless to say, the fun in it was to meet with all the wonderful people here at Com Central, and if you shared in the fun, it's a matter of pride to me having been part of it.

So, while the New Year is approaching quickly, I'd like to thank all those who attended, even though for just one leg, and contributed to make this event something to be remembered. I should mention at least a couple of people in particular, our kind host Jerry and our ATC Wolter, but I won't to avoid jumping on anybody's toe... oops, did I? Mr. Green

Laughing

It's very nice to see what we have been doing over the past year online and I must commend Marco for the excellent job he did by tinkering up all the flightplans we used for this endeavour.

So A BIG Cheers for Marco aka Uhu_Rodion for beeing the driving force of the flightplan department and also without his exploits off and on the runway we would have had loads of less to laugh about.

Thank you Marco !

p.s. everything is as good as the sum of it's parts Wink
