Up, Up, and Away!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Folks!

Seat belts?

The M113 had them. I remember most of the time they were rolled up and taped so they would be in good shape for inspections, but no one ever used them during training. In all my time around M113s, only remember one time a driver did used one. Good thing to, he ended rolling the vehicle when the ground gave way along one side.

Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

The M551 had them for the driver,
The hatch was pretty big. We had a driver ejected when his tank flipped ass over nose when the track snapped when I was at Irwin. No injuries to any of the crew (Only God knows why). The little beast was fun as hell to use, jumping tank ditches and berms were routine. Never broke a torsion bar. Did break my wrist. Remember, we stripped out everything unneccesary so the power to weight ratio was much better than stock. Weakest link automotive wise for us was the flywheel flexplate, get too crazy with the sagger drills and it would shear. They also had a nasty habit of getting engine runaways while I was there. Had to throw it in neutral, open the grills, disconnect the air intake hose and cover it with a clipboard, manual, shirt or whatever to starve the engine before it self destructed. If your lucky all you'd need was a new injector, most often you needed a new engine. Then life sucked.

Any idea what the rationale is for not having safety belts/harnesses?

SEATBELT?.....IN A TANK?.....What the heck is that?

I'm sorely tempted to delete those posts before NHTSA or some congresscritter see's them. Wink

So i'm guessing the airbags and padded dashboards and anti-lock brakes are also a "no"?
