1st AD Tanks Arrive At Fort Bliss, Texas!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Apparently 3rd Battalion, 36th Infantry is a combined arms battalion:

aec.army.mil/usaec/pub...r0702.html

"This is especially important with the 3/36th, because the unit reflects not only the future of Fort Bliss, but of the entire Army. The 3/36th is a combined arms battalion within the 5th Brigade, 1st Armored Division, also known as the Army Evaluation Task Force, a unit formed to test Future Combat Systems technologies"

5th BCT, 1st Armored Division:

www.bliss.army.mil/5BD.../index.htm

Mark, I think you're going to see some cool stuff down at Fort Bliss - I envy you!

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

I knew I should have taken the time to scan that photo and post it when I got home Tuesday morning before going to bed! Good work!

Hey Neil! Thanks for the link to the USAEC site and their story on the 3rd Bn 36th Infantry.

The local press keeps reporting that the 1st AD has started arriving from Germany and they have totally missed the small detail that this unit (3rd/36th) is a NEW UNIT within the US Army and not a 1st AD unit moving here from Germany under BRAC. The new M2A3 Bradleys that came in about a month ago and these M1A2 SEP Abrams are fresh rebuilds, payed for with special funding from the FCS account, and not old 1st AD vehicles (M2A2s or M1A1 AIMs) being shipped here from Germany.

It's good to see AFVs are returning to Ft. Bliss.

Well actually what I noticed first was the picture saying an Abrams belonged to an infantry battalion -which didnt seem to make sense (except in a combat task-organized kind of way), until I realized that they were probably a combined arms battalion... I then noticed it was a new unit as well...

Sounds like you are still thinking of the old type of TOEs where armor was in tank battalions and riflemen were in infantry battalions. With this new Unit of Action type battalions, the old names don't always follow the new format.

So far the local news has only reported one mech infantry company and one tank company. I am thinking THAT might be all the FCS test unit will need or have, as far as tanks and infantry goes, and the 3/36 will not be a full size battalion with four combat companies.

The term Unit of Action has been (quietly) dead for about a year or two now. Yes, they have gone to Modular Brigade Combat Teams... But as far as I know, looking out across the various brigade websites, it appears that for right now at least tank battalions are still tank battalions (albeit leg infantry all too often if they are in Iraq) and infantry battalions are infantry battalions - although in practice they are cross-attached and task-organized . I could be wrong, but I believe having tanks in the TOE of an infantry battalion - such as the 3-36 - is a relatively new thing (relatively being considering all the other exceptions Wink

But someone who is in right now might be able to educate us a little better...

I know "UofA" is dead and I for one hate that term. Evil or Very Mad My problem is I keep forgetting the name has changed to "Modular". Shocked One of this days I may remember that and start using "Modular" the year after it has changed to something else.

At my age now days I am doing good to just be able to use a PC! I find myself getting stuck and failing to keep up with the latest changes! Crying or Very sad

I thought it odd too that the tanks were part of an Infantry Batallion. Had also not heard of a 5th Brigade in an armored division. When they get deployed they will be mixed like this so I guess it's a good idea to organize them this way. Prior to the picture being taken these tanks were over at Biggs field. I went by on the day they moved out and they had an armor guidon flying at the entrance to the motor pool. Wish I had stopped to read it.

I have read that the infantry company is A. Kept your eyes open for the tank company guidon or any signs. It would be very interesting if the tank company comes up a B Company.

Their motor pool in on Ft. Bliss and not out at Briggs field?

1st Cav Division here in Iraq is organized into CABs - Combined Arms Battalions. These units have both M1A2s and Bradley A3s, and sometimes they have Strykers attached as well.

Now, Geoff, are those task organized or not? Ie is X Company, Y-Y Infantry an actual tank company? Or is it X Company, Z-Z Armor attached to Y-Y Infantry?

Roy,

I posted a picture last week of tanks with the "Heavy Brigade Combat Team Fielding Team" www.com-central.net/in...pic&t=7013 They were at Biggs but moved to Fort Bliss. They are the same tanks. I incorrectly identified them as 4BCT 1st Cav tanks.

I think I spotted their motor pool on the way home this morning. I notice the Patriot launchers where missing from a motor pool that almost always had them. Then I notice three Bradley Command vehicles. I had not noticed them before because I was always looking off the right and checking out the construction of the new interchange.

Mark, have you noticed the old HQ's building for the 3rd ACR is empty?
The 107th ADA Bde HQ had been in there. Maybe that was the motor pool the 3/63/5BCT is setting up in.

Hi Folks!

Last week's base newspaper had a story about C Company doing some live fire training and a couple of civilian groups were invited to watch.

The story reported that the Abrams were M1A2 SEP V2.

Between a couple of poor newspaper photos and passing four Abrams being carried back to Ft. Bliss, none of them looked like any of the TUSK mods had been installed.

Anyone else heard that term yet?
