So what's with the new N54 forum???
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: So what's with the new N54 forum???

Just noticed it on afvnews.ca... Started on Dec. 20. Just wondering what the rationale was, how its supposed to be different from this one, etc...

I checked the N54, but I dislike it already with all the adverts and (non-military) photo's in and around your message

Hang on, Fella's...

George makes the purpose of the new forum perfectly clear below (I have taken the liberty of quoting him directly in the interest of clarity because I think it merits it) . I've had a look and don't see any reason to criticize or object to this forum nor had I heard about the forum previously or otherwise heard from George or had it suggested that we should in any way alter the identity of this one... and you can see we are co-listed at the link, which you can find on the AFV logo above if use use the AFV "theme" here or at www.afvnews.ca

George has several uniquely-focused sites linked on his AFV News site and these forums are but two of them reflecting his many diverse interests in armor, just as our members do. The...

AFV NEWS (Com-Central) FORUM: New Armour Discussion Group

AFV NEWS N54 FORUM: Armour Discussion Group

...have names (as they appear at the AFV New site) that pretty clearly define George's original vision and while it might be our forum on a day-to-day basis, it owes it's inspiration, beginning, and name....to AFV News.

If ever the if-you-can't-say-something-nice-about-something rule ever applied, this would be the time. I personally think we owe a hell of a lot to George and I, for one, welcome a specialized armor modeling forum and know some other members here will as well and I expect to see them participating there.

Doug

Welcome;

Just about now you must be wondering what the helll Jack and I are up to, and what's wrong with our Com-Central forum. To be honest, no problem there. Anyone wanting to use both will be welcome.

I simply wanted to try and get a Network-54 Style forum going, because I prefer that format.
Jack and I aren't even sure what ASPECT of armour modeling we are going to target yet.
Any suggestions would be appreciated...

We have a START here... just need some INSPIRATION!

Hi Folks!

I checked the N54, but I dislike it already with all the adverts and (non-military) photo's in and around your message

I too have checked it out and have tried to add my 2 cents to a couple of the posts George started.

I have to agree with Lesley, the Goggly ads do distracked for the postings. Maybe that's something George will be able to adjust as he explores that format.

I for one am happy with this format, but I will be checking on the other site from time to time.

My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out!

With regard to the "Ads by Google", it's worth noting historically that one of the criteria for the forums was that they be self-supporting financially. The originally AFV Forum was, to the best of my knowledge, a no or minimal-cost proposition and one of the conditions of establishing this one when we were forced to move was that it impose no financial burden as well. Server space for blogs and forums have to be funded somehow and "Ads by Google" is a common means to do this. We are blessed here with generous hosts who make this space available to us without those encumbrances.

Our hosts do, however, accept donations as you can see on the sidebar at bottom left and if you're not comfortable with PayPal (as I wasn't) other arrangements can be made to send a check or money order to help fund this great ad-free site. I encourage all members to consider this option, and not to be critical of the Newwork54 site for doing what any number of sites out there do to maintain their self-sufficiency.

And if you haven't subscribed to AFV News or renewed lately, that'd be a good idea too! Wink

Hi, Doug, Hi, Fellow CIA members!

There probably can't be too many Armored Fighting Vehicles fora (Sorry, 'forums' sounds funny to me, Mister Grammar Butthead) for folks to browse. I'm sure some will settle on one or another, but most will, like me, likely hum about like little bees from one site to another. As Jack said, maybe there will be a 1/48th Universe, where 1/35th is a foreign tongue, and one in which anything larger than 1/76th will be found laughably enormous. But weathering, historical accuracy, and fanatical devotion to modeling detail are a common ground we all can occupy.

Modelers, Unite! We have nothing to lose but our (pesky little one-piece vinyl) chains!

I enjoy this new forum, and wonder if we shall ever see a rebirth of that wonderful Japanese Navy site.

Bring 'Em On,
Russ

BTW, I'd be happy to re-up, subscribe for AFV News - if only I could pay for it with PayPal or credit card or something. Sorry, I just about never send out any mail or write checks...

Then there are those of us who have realized we would rather talk and read about armor but don't have the time anymore to build or try and paint kits

If you have any good naval discussion forums I'd like to know of them I participate one that is concentrated on 'neverbuilts' but would love to find some good general naval forums

Hey Bob, I am a fan of what-if tanks and planes. This site about "neverbuilts" sounds interesting. Can you post the link?

Hey AJ2, I got that link! I am a poster there Laughing What I was looking for was the one for "neverbuilts" involving ship classes never built. Sorry I did not make myself clear

With regards to naval forums there is a strong component of modeling (and an even stronger one of photo interp and history) of Japanese vessels at:
