The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. Hi Folks!

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a M-577A3 and a M-1068A3 Command Post vehicle when looking at the outside of one?

I think these vehicles are fresh rebuilds. Note the IR headlights are missing, the mine plate and the T150F type track block.

In 98-99 I had an XM1068, which was a prototype upgraded M577.

The primary difference is the external mounted, telescoping antenna on the rear, as well as the APU mount noticeabley different construction than the M577. The APUs (generators) are no longer gas but diesel powered and draw fuel directly from the vehicles fuel tanks.

The big differences are internal with MCS / FBCB2 and other newer 'goodies'.

HI Dontos! Hi Folks!

- Dontos

The primary difference is the external mounted, telescoping antenna on the rear,

I guess I need to go back on post and see if I can see this item.

as well as the APU mount noticeabley different construction than the M577. The APUs (generators) are no longer gas but diesel powered and draw fuel directly from the vehicles fuel tanks.

I was looking at spec's for the M-577A3 and the M-1068A3 before I posted my question to see if there was anything different on the outside. I too was thinking that the APU rack was a way to tell. Not so. One of the things that makes a M-577A3 an "A3" is the new diesel APU.

Thanks Don!

When I was working at Anniston I saw a price tag on the APU of $54,000. Must be good stuff! I'm glad to see they are using that new track. I'll bet it's a lot tougher than the old stuff. I think the new APU affords some armor protection which is an improvement. Look at my special hat:
