For all the 'Starship' Fans
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I found this today, I believe it is the M60A2 gun system while being constructed at the factory, circa 1975.

'Fans'? Is there such a thing for M-60A2s? Everything I read about that vehicle from bad to unprintable. I saw a vehicle named by its crew
'Computerized Agony' (sic) not a term of endearment, but at least it could better take the recoil from a 152mm regular shell than a M-551

Some people have lamentable histories exhorably linked to the thing (well, both of the aforementioned vehicles, actually, among others) with a love/hate sort of fondness that's inexplicable today. We'll leave names out of this. Wink

Oh, I don't know. As a "civy" and a modeler I think I qualify as a fan.

Mark,
Here's another one you can use if you want. Like the night launch of the Shillelagh missile shot, shouldn't have that copyright claim on it, though...both were taken by Photo & Graphics Branch of the Armor Board.

They really liked that spot in the creek, there's a well-known Sheridan shot at the same crossing. Rocketed over that spot a few time myself.

Sure thing dude.

Just wait till you see the video I'm editing with over 50 photos of the assembly of the M60A1.

There are a couple of shots with M60A2's in the background.

I hope to have it done tonight and will have it posted on my You Tube. Stay tuned

BTW: I thought it was a 'turret blower' but there is the infamous 'range fan'.

"Turret Blower" was what we called gay crewmembers Shocked

Probably the 'turret fan' term came from Sheridans.

Thanks for the pictures!

BTW, I've also set up an M114 group.

Now that we are discussing M60A2's

How many are actually left (Confirmable) that haven't been converted to bridgelayers, ROBAT, or other stuff ? Hint, it's in the single digits.

IMO the few left qualify as rarities.

I think there are more Panthers out there Confused

BTW, haven't made it to Shelby yet, still in Louisiana.

I looked at the Flickr site and there is a NICE batch of M551 photos there!

I wish I still had some of the photos that I shot when I went to the Armed Forces Day display at the Patton Museum in 1974 or 75. There were quite a few "modern" (at the time) Army vehicles there including an M60A2. This was during the research into camouflage before the MERDC pattern were adopted and a bunch of the stuff on display at Knox were painted in a camouflage of "khaki-drab" (close to the Humbrol color of that name) with flat black overspray. Quite different than anything else in use at that time.

Gary,
A test project had been running at the Armor Board during my time with them ('72-end of '73), during which we evaluated a 4-pattern camo of some Swedish origin (so it was said) and a khaki/desert color we unofficially referred to as "Afrika Corps Sand". M60A1 looked great in this and we all thought every tank in the Army should be painted that colore immediately, whether or not it was appropriate to the theatre. Laughing Damn, it was beautiful!

Testing included going out to driving and range areas and having a gaggle of Armor Board officers and troopers take turns trying to spot vehicles at various distances, static and moving (as they approached). Mean detection distances were recorded. I have abnormal color vision and sometimes picked them up early as the pattern didn't work as intended with my special "gift".

Doug,

Was this the Swedish splinter (later adopted) type or the prototype spots and blotches camouflage?
