Aberdeen-1941 Photos
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Too bad we can't see the RN on the M4A2 being tested. It might still be in the Museum collection!!!

The 'Firefly' at the Ordnance Museum is actually a Firefly turret that was put on an M4A2 hull already in the museum collection. According to Joe DeMarco that M4A2 hull is the first Alco built M4A2. It wouldn't be much of a stretch for that to be the tank in the pictures being tested!

Something else I just noticed. The tanks has a one piece differential cover. I thought that all the early Shermans used the 3 piece bolted together differential. but the photo says it was taken in 1941. Was the one piece differential in use then?

I have some images of M4A2 with the early peepslot hull being manufactured and they all seem to have the one-piece differential. The exception seems to be the first twelve manufactured which appear to be fitted with the three-piece diff (and the twin MGs)

Do you have pictures of the suspension of the early M4A2s?

Looking at the Life photos they have the 'M3 Lee' type VVSS units (return roller centered over unit) Looking at recent pictures of the 'Firefly' it has the later trailing rollers. It does have indications that it was originally fitted with twin fixed MGs (there is a 'plate' on the bow in that position and there was brakets inside the hull that confused the restoration shop at first until I suggested it may have been remnants of the twin MG mounts)

I can see the VVSS units being replaced sometime in the vehicles life (especially if it was a test vehicle at Aberdeen). But since none of the M4A2s in the Life pictures have the evidence of the twin MGs I guess my original thought that it mave have been the surviving vehicel is wrong Crying or Very sad
