Circleville, OH M32 TRV
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Circleville, OH M32 TRV

First saw this one back in 2008, well before I even knew of the AFV register. Been wanting to visit ever since, and finally got the chance today. I checked against both SN guides and wasn't able to locate anything in the usual spots, unfortunately.

American Legion Post #137

A flagpole has been mounted in the turret, and there are lights wired onto the tank to light it up at night.

I think this is the longest-lasting display I've yet visited. Interesting also to hear it drove here under its' own power.

Looks like the engine might still be inside?

The hull is open in a number of places, but I didn't try to look in too far-I don't want to imagine what might be living inside by now.

One hatch up as well

I assume the device on the right...er...sprocket thingy (i've forgotten my tank terminology at the moment) is for a crane, but why would there only be one on the right side?

By 'sproket thingy' Do you mean the 'Sherman Comb'?

web.inter.nl.net/users...4/comb.htm

For the whole story

Edit - After re reading your posting and contemplating it for a few minutes I think you mean the plate with a whole in it mounted on the drive sproket. I believe that was used as a 'power takeoff' point to either raise the crane jib or to provide winching power in addition to the main PTO cable that feeds through the opening in theglacias above the final drive.
I could see it being used in recovery operations where a cable hooked to it would wind in or out (depending how it was fed) and spool around the extended shaft outboard of the drive sproket. It appears on every M32 I can think of

No He means the capstan on the sprocket that was used to raise and lower the boom.

This one is a Ford-engined M32B3.

As the boys said, the oblong capstan on the right track sprocket was used just to move the jib boom from the rear (stowed) position to the front (lifting) position. There was a nice set of drawings in an older Mlitary Modeling magazine that showed the process. Note that the jib boom (removed from this vehicle) had a lifting quadrant on the right side. Basically a cable was run between capstan and lifting quadrant, vehicle drives forward slightly, boom is now in the raised position - crude but effective.
