New walkarounds
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Taranov! You're my hero (of the Soviet Union)! I've been trying to accumulate decent photos of the B-4 for quite some time. I know that there are still a number of them in Russia and there are photos on TheTankmaster that show an incomplete version with a fascinating and complicated multi-wheeled trailer that apparently holds up the trail end of the gun carriage. Any detail photos of this device? Thanks!

Yuri,
Those photos of the Pak 43 from St. Petersburg are brilliant! I've been looking for photos that were originally posted on Tanks2Scale and those are exactly what I was looking for.

Many thanks!
Bruce

As i can see, limber and barrel trailer of B-4 located in Central Army Museum in Moscow. If this part of otdoor exhibition is not closed, i can try to make walkaround of limber and barrel trailer.

That would be excellent if you have the chance. I believe that there was a fence around them though... Thanks again for the excellent photos!

One of my great uncles (a Finnish veteran of the Winter and Continuation War) used to tell horror stories about the Maxims without the enlarged water jacket, first introduced with the Finnish m/32 Maxim and later copied by the Soviets. Without the enlarged water jacket MG crews sometimes ended up pilling up snow around the barrel jacket in an attempt to keep it cool.

I especially remember one story from the winter war where my great uncles unit was entrenched at one end of a large clearing and the temprature was way below -30°C. At the other end the Soviets were massing for an assault. The assault came during the night in full moonlight and was preceded my a massive "HUUURAHHH" and "SA RODINA" war cry. The first wave was completly cut down not even half way across, the second wave came a little closer and the third a little closer still and they just kept coming. At that point the Finns noticed that many of the Soviet soldiers seemed unarmed or just armed with a shovel or a bayonet. My great uncle didn't remember how long the action lasted but he said they just kept coming until there were no more.

The Finns ammo was close to depleted and the pre m/32 non-converted Maxims were severly overheated when the assault was finally halted. At the end the crews of the MG's were firing close to blind cause of the piles of snow they had to shovel over the jackets.

My great uncle who was an SMG gunner assigned to recon was sent out for the after action mop-up in the early morning. They were told to salvage all weapons and ammo they could from the fallen Soviets as they used the same calibers as the Finns and to take prisoners, thing is there was not much to salvage and no prisoners to be taken. My great uncle was horrified and said he'd never before or after seen such a carnage (his word was "slaughter"), there were hundreds upon hundreds of Soviet fallen. The ones that had been wounded had all frozen to death, there were no survivors ... none.

He was also horrified at the discovery that only every third or fourth Soviet soldier had a rifle, the rest were unarmed or just armed with knives and shovels as they'd seen during the night. The ones armed had one spare stripper clip of ammo, and when the actions of the rifles were examined they found that few had fired more than one or two shots. Many Finns were very angry, they just couldn't fathom that anyone could send unarmed men into battle against a well entrenched defender. "There was no glory in that victory" my great uncle said and spoke of it no more.

Sorry for going so way off topic.

Rik
