Ford Tactical Vehicle in Iraq
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Ford Tactical Vehicle in Iraq

One of my captains sent a photo of his new ride in Iraq. A Ford built armored vehicle. Despite being a Chevy man, he really likes it.



Here's a quote from the e-mail where I asked for more photos:
the vehicle is built on a Ford 550 chassis and the dash and steering column looks just like any Ford full size truck. It has two layers of B7 armor with an air pocket in between the layers. Behind the front seats it has two bench seats back to back from front to back and a turret (the thing strapped to the top, uninstalled). It has a wicked powerful turbo diesel engine and I hit 80 in no time flat. Very comfortable ride and very roomy. I could get in it easily in full body armor with weapons.

I can think of places in some major U.S. cities where that would be useful.

We'ld have to redo the paint job (but it does look like it is a good primer gray to start.

Did everyone notice the upgrade that was recently done to the 'quick reply' section? It now includes all the formatting features and emoticons that used to only be available via the full 'post reply' or 'quote' buttons

Man, how can anything look less like a military vehicle? Those 'tonka truck' ptoportions, the black trim, the turnsignals embedded in the rearview mirrors! Shocked

Area looks familier,
Maybe I'll see it cruising the IZ. How'd he rate a cool ride like that. Is Ford trying to cut into the H2 business GM has with this thing Shocked ? Doesn't look like it's set up for anything tactical (IR, BO, Radios, etc) unless that all will be installed with the turret. IMO it looks like a VIP vehicle to shuttle big wigs around or at least escort them. The next question is.... When's the civilian version due out in the US? Laughing

Its a Ghurka...

Built by Armet Armoured vehicles who have loaned some of their prototypes to the US Army in an attempt to get them to buy some I suspect.

No I don't think so - current plans appear to be to replace all the hummers with a mine resistant vehicle.

I don't think so! The only way the Border Patrol would buy something like that is if it is cheaper than other current 4x4s. That's why the Patrol bought very few Hummers. They cost twice as much as a standard 4x4 and don't last any longer.

I have to agree that Ford doesn't look very military, look more like something out of a SciFi movie/TV series to me.

Hi folks,
Seen it (or it's twin) today. Yep, standard Ford chassis with an armored shell. It had the turret mounted but no weapon. Saw ammo inside for 7.62 x 54mm (RPK/RPC) and a bunch of civilians using it (Contractors?). It is definately does not look designed to go into the mean streets of Baghdad. Gotta be for IZ to Airport runs. Looks like it would be fun though.
