Life magazine photos on the web (with tanks)...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

On another board it was brought out that there are a bunch of old LIFE magazine photos on the web.

You may be right. The Calico Mountains on the left with Yermo in the background.

or T29 (or T34?)

I so cannot keep those big prototypes straight. But I love the looks a lot more than the M103.

Did you notice the Ontos in the bottom right corner?

If he had a camera pole he wouldn't be casting that large tower shadow either Smile

Thanks, I totally missed the Ontos. Definitely Barstow on closer look.

Went digging around and found more T series photos that seem to have been taken in July 1950.

Doing some analysis and think I got this solved. Neil,(or anyone who might have a better clue than me,...) feel free to correct me.

T29 series tank photos
Of the two vehicles in this photo:
> The front tank is either the T30 or T34. Unsure of this vehicle.
> The right rear vehicle seems to be the T 29E__ series ? (note: small tensioner idler)

T29 and T42?

Duh,....its on the front slope

T30 Heavy Tank

The T30 Heavy Tank

Cool stuff....

Yes - it wasn't long before the hatches went from the superstructure sides.

re: "dead German" in the tank - this has been identified as part of the famous "tank battle in Cologne" series from 1945. This is said to be the driver of the M4A1 76mm Wet Stowage from 3rd Armored Div that was KO'd by a German Panther - there are numerous photos of the tank from the rear right after the hit. The Panther was in turn stalked and destroyed by a T26E3.

re: where I learned about these - I saw a notice on Missing Links and started playing with the search function.

Lots of interesting color stuff from WW2. Some has been seen before, but these are nice clear large files that are nice for those of use who crowd our hard drives with tank photos.

Since these are LIFE photos and many carry the watermark I will bet the copyright is closely held. BE CAREFUL about reproduction without prior permission!

Search "Atomic Cannon". Great pictures. Also some good shots of "Patton".
