Sierra Club Charter

Event begins immediately following the Sunday Flight.  A second running of this flight will occur on Thursday, May 24th at 1900 UTC  (1400 ET (US)).

First of all, let’s cover the required files list for this flight.  These files are mandatory – you must have them installed on your system.

  • The aircraft will be the Maule M7-260 with tundra tires available in the CC Downloads section.
  • The scenery is the awesome Glacier Bay package available on Flightsim.com and Avsim.   The file names to search for are:   glbayv2a.zip  and  glbayv2b.zip.  These are large downloads – 56 megs and 85 megs respectively, but ‘you get what you pay for’  in terms of file size.  This package covers a large area in the northern panhandle of Alaska and includes accurate mesh, shorelines, landclass, airports and a whole lot of beautiful eye candy.
  • The scenery files included in this package:  move or copy the Com Central Bush Flights folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder. This adds fictitious detail to CBS4 Mule Creek. If you haven’t already installed Com Central Bush Flights scenery from previous flights, then be sure to go into your Scenery Library and activate this scenery.

Now, on to the particulars for this adventure.

The CCB_006.zip file contains the following:

  • CCB_006 Briefing     This briefing document.
  • CCB_006 Briefing_files  folder    Contains images for this document.
  • CCB_006.fsn     FSNav flight plan.     Move or copy this file to your fs9\modules\FSNavigator\plan folder.
  • Flight Simulator Files folder   Contains GPS flight plan and saved flight to begin this adventure. Three files in this folder are: CCB_006 VFR Yakutat Emergency.PLN , CCB_006, and CCB006.wx.  Move or copy this folder to your  My Documents folder and overwrite when prompted..
  • CCB_006-Sectional.jpg    A partial sectional chart roughly describing our route.
  • Com Central Bush Flights folder    Contains scenery for CBS4 Mule Creek.  Move or copy this folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder and activate it in the fs9 Scenery Library if needed. Overwrite if prompted.

The Adventure

Members of the Sierra Club and a few amateur wildlife photographers at Mule Creek have been alerted to the presence of two large herds of deer to the South and East of the Wood Lake Science Station.  We’ll depart PAHN Haines with mail and packages for Mule Creek, offload this cargo and take on passengers for the flight to the Wood Lake area, where we hope to find these herds of deer.  We’ll make off-field landings if we find them.  Once the passengers have had a chance to take their photographs, we’ll transport them to a meeting at PAOH Hoonah.

The Flight

Here’s an overview of our approximate flight path for today:

Cruise Altitude:  1000’ msl or as required

Cruise Speed:   145 kias

Power Settings:   25”hg Manifold Pressure @ 2400 rpm

PAHN Haines to CBS4 Mule Creek - Flight Time about 25 minutes

Load your aircraft with mail and packages and taxi to runway 26.  Intersection departures are approved.  Cruise up the river valley at 1000’ msl  until just before Fix03, at which point begin a 500’ per minute climb up the mountain valley to about 4000-4500’ msl.  The flight plan track will put you right on a short left downwind approach to runway 16.  Taxi to the apron to offload the mail and load the passengers and their photography gear.

PAHN Runway 26- Departure heading 263 degrees  Elevation 16’ msl,  4000’ x 100’ asphalt

CBS4 Runway 16- Approach heading 154 degrees  Elevation 2959’ msl,  2460’ x 65’ gravel

CBS4 Mule Creek to Wood Lake Wildlife Area - Flight Time about 45 minutes

Taxi to and depart from runway 16.  Begin an immediate 500’ per minute climb to 4500-4800 feet msl as you follow the track up the mountain valleys. At about Fix16 climb to 6000’ msl to clear the glacier.  Continue at 6000’ until Fix20, then descend at -500’ per minute back down to 1000’ msl, remaining there until we arrive at the broad valley with the wildlife.  Just before we intercept the river at Fix30, descend to treetop level, extend two notches of flaps and slow to 65 – 70 kias.  Switch your view to the 2D panel minigauges to improve your ability to see ahead and below and follow the river.  When you spot deer, pick a spot in the fields and land. There should be two separate herds, so we’ll take off from the first herd and try to find the second. If we do find it, we’ll land again and let the passengers have their fun.

CBS4 Runway 16- Departure heading 154 degrees  Elevation 2959’ msl,  2460’ x 65’ asphalt

Wildlife Area – Open fields. No runways

Wood Lake Wildlife Area to PAOH Hoonah - Flight Time about 20 minutes

Taxi to a good spot for takeoff and depart.  Cruise at 1000’ msl and follow the track to Hoonah.  The flight plan will guide you to a long left base leg for runway 5.  The runway is behind a low ridge, so keep your altitude a little high and keep the runway in sight.

Wildlife Area – Open fields. No runways so depart as able.

PAOH Runway 5- Approach heading 052 degrees  Elevation 19’ msl,  2997’ x 75’ asphalt

That’s it!  I hope you enjoyed the flight, and I hope to see you again in future Com Central Bush Flight adventures!
