Remote Camp Resupply

Event begins immediately following the Sunday Flight.  This flight will be run a second time on June 21st at 1400 ET (US)  1900 GMT

First of all, let’s cover the required files list for this flight.  These files are mandatory – you must have them installed on your system.

·        The aircraft will be the Maule M7-260 with wheels and skis available in the CC Downloads section.

·        The scenery is the awesome Glacier Bay package available on Flightsim.com and Avsim.   The file names to search for are:   glbayv2a.zip  and  glbayv2b.zip.  These are large downloads – 56 megs and 85 megs respectively, but ‘you get what you pay for’  in terms of file size.  This package covers a large area in the northern panhandle of Alaska and includes accurate mesh, shorelines, landclass, airports and a whole lot of beautiful eye candy.

·        The scenery files included in this package:  move or copy the Com Central Bush Flights folder to your fs9\addon scenery folder. This adds two fictitious campsites and a permanent camp to the Glacier Bay scenery. If you haven’t already installed Com Central Bush Flights scenery from previous flights, then be sure to go into your Scenery Library and activate this scenery.

·        Please read and follow all of the instructions in the Com Central Bush Flying Flights – More Required Files and Instructions  forum thread.

·        Please download and install the files in the Com Central Bush Flying Flights – Bush Flights Scenery Library Update v1.0 forum thread.  This contains scenery objects and textures for this and future bush flights.

The Adventure

Our task today is to deliver supplies to three remote locations.  The first will be to a team of geologists who are camped on a 6000+ foot plateau on Mount Crillon just north of Brady Glacier.  Because of this high altitude landing, we will be unable to fully load our aircraft.  The second is northeast of Mount Crillon to a team of glaciologists who are examining  and mapping ice caves at a ridge in Ferris Glacier. Then we’ll fly to a permanent camp on the Endicott River to deliver food and truck parts to the inhabitants. Finally, we’ll fly to Juneau International to end out flight for the day.

The Flight

Here’s an overview of our approximate flight path for today:

Cruise Altitude:  As required

Cruise Speed:   136 kias

Power Settings:   24”hg Manifold Pressure @ 2400 rpm

PAGS Gustavus to Mount Crillon Camp - Flight Time about 30 minutes

Load your aircraft with supplies and the truck parts for the folks at Endicott River. Put the cargo all the way to the back to make trimming the aircraft at landing easier.  Taxi to and depart from runway 29 and climb to 1000’msl.  We’ll be passing very near the herds of deer on the Dundas River early in our flight, but by this time of day they’ve melted back into the forest and won’t be visible. At Fix05, begin a 600’ per minute climb to 7000’ to clear the highest obstruction on our way to Mount Crillon.  Don’t put off this climb – near the end of it, the terrain rises far too steeply to climb over it if you’re too low when you get there.  The left turn at Fix 13 will point you right at the plateau. Fortunately, the plateau is bigger then it looks so there’s actually plenty of room to land. Pick a semi-flat spot and land carefully. Remember that your stall speed will be higher at this altitude. Taxi to the campsite to drop off the supplies to the scientists.

Mount Crillon Camp to Ferris Glacier Camp - Flight Time about 20 minutes

After unloading, turn around at the camp to head back the way you came in for takeoff.  Use short field procedures.  You can begin an immediate descent at 1000’ per minute down to 1500’msl on departure.  We’ll head down the glacier to John Hopkins Inlet, where we’ll intercept Tarr Inlet.  At Fix22, climb to 2500’msl to clear the terrain.  At Fix23 turn left down Ferris Glacier and begin your approach to the campsite.  See the images below for an indication of where to land.  Taxi up to the campsite and unload the glaciologists’ supplies.

Fix24 Ferris Glacier Camp  Elevation 1781’ msl  Ice and Snow

Ferris Glacier Camp to Endicott River Camp - Flight Time about 30 minutes

Once again, turn around at the campsite and take off back the way you came in.  Maintain adequate altitude to clear the glacier as you head back to Tarr Inlet.  From this point on, we’ll be cruising at 1500’msl.  We’ll be heading down Tarr Inlet to Glacier Bay where, at Fix27, we’ll turn left into Tidal Inlet to the Ice River Valley.  Once clear of the valley, we’ll head across Muir Inlet to Adams Inlet. From there, it’s a right turn into the Endicott River Valley to the permanent camp that needs the food and truck parts.  This will be a fairly easy off field landing in a large clearing.  Refer to the images below.  Taxi to the camp and unload.

Fix34 Endicott River Camp  Elevation 675’ msl  Grass

Endicott River Camp to PAJN Juneau - Flight Time about 25 minutes

Taxi out into the field back the way you came in until you have enough room to get airborne over the camp.  Cruise altitude will be 1500’msl.  Follow the Endicott River to Lynn Canal. We’ll pass down Favorite Channel past the Sentinel Island Lighthouse to Point Louisa where we’ll turn left to make the approach to Juneau runway 8.  Land and taxi to the location indicated below.

That’s it!  I hope you enjoyed the flight, and I hope to see you again in future Com Central Bush Flight adventures!
