M60 located in Cleveland Mississippi
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M60 located in Cleveland Mississippi

Finally was able to document this tank,

I used to pass through Cleveland every 4-6 weeks many years ago. I had thought the Guard Center had been closed with the re alignment of the MSARNG Units when I tried to locate it and couldn't. I just didn't realize how far off the path it was and finally located it via Google when I was searching MSARNG Armories for AFV's a few months ago. She is located at the end of Charlie Capps Road in Cleveland, 33.767173, -90.713160. She is still wearing her original paint job from when she was in service with the MSARNG, but very worn to the point unit ID is not discernible. She is not listed in the AFV Register 4.4.

She is an early Newark produced tank, SN 96, RN 9B3190.

She does look a bit lost sitting there, doesn't she. Would love to take her home with me.

I love inspecting these tanks, since you really never know what you might find. This one still retained all the old mounts and equipment for installing the M2 Flex .50 cal, to include both interrupters and the barrel stowage clip. She also was originally equipped with the Crouse-Hinds searchlight, and still has the lower stowage bracket welded below the turret blower housing. The early tanks equipped with this light also had a grounding lug welded on top of the turret, which has been removed but the scars were very visible. The most interesting find was the bore evacuator locking ring. She still has the original style used with the UK supplied tubes. Only seen this on one other M60 I've inspected, and that was also a Newark produced tank located in Helena Oklahoma. Like all other M60's, I'm glad to add another to my database, so if she ever is removed, there's a record of what she was like and that she existed. Since I started photo documenting M60's I know of over 20 that are no longer around and no idea where they ended up. Most are former Armory displays. The M60 at the former New Albany MS armory is one that I never got a chance to look at before she was removed.

She would be in good hands. Wink

Should she turn up in your garage, we never talked about this....
