New Pics from APG - M4A1(76) Sherman, M60A2, LT-35, S-35,
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Folks, I want to sing Neils praises. I was there when he took the Matilda pics. I couldn't see as much detail by looking in the hatch as Neil has in the pictures!


Me either! Thats the flash working! I often take pics like that "blind" but can adjust based on the review feature on the digital camera.


And those pictures were made with a handheld 'ctick the camera in the hatch' method. And the warehouse doesn't seem to be lit anywhere near as well as Neil makes it appear.


Yeah, thats why my trusty tripod is so important. I can slow down the shutter speed to allow more light - but you need a stable base or else it gets fuzy. Lowest shutter speed I like to do by hand, bracing as much as possible, is about 1/60 second. For the shots inside the warehouse, it was at 1/4 second shutter speed.

Unfortunately, it can lead to some wierd lighting. Some pictures got "greened" out - look at Slo Poke for example.


Neil Thanks for all the photo's I know I like them and I can see the subjects on a regular basis. For the folks who can't get to Aberdeen the pictures are the next best thing. Of course you don't get the inciteful commentary that you get on my guided tours Smile So there is still a reason to make the trip.


No problem. I enjoyed the tour as well - highly recommended!

Yeah, it takes an expert to move a bunch of sliders around randomly until it looks better! Laughing

Doug,
I believe the M60A2 was a tank might have been used by the school house at Aberdeen to train mechanics. The brackets were probably made for a ladder much like the pilots. The hull is a late model with the CBSS bulge and heavy lifting eyes. Just a guess.

Doug that's picture didlin' is great!! You can't see the Crusader in the background that clearly in person!! It has been sitting in that dark corner for at least 5 years!

Neil,
I was informed today by Neil Morrison, the 11th ACR museum director, that the 11th ACR will no longer support or assist the museum anymore. They still want their name plastered every where but, and this is not an exageration, they will not even give the museum reems of paper for its copy machine, or pay for the fuel that goes in the M2 Half Track that Doug drove. Neil at the museum and the other two gentlemen there had to spend $40 out of their own pockets for gas in the half-track. I had to take them copy paper from my office. Seems the 11th wants the museum to work for them when ever the need arrises, ie; host change of commands, tours, etc, but wont lift a finger to help the museum. So as you can see, getting the old 2/11 Sherman to Fort Irwin from APG, simply wont happen. Quite sad that a unit with such history, wont do anything to preserve it. Just another reason why I'll be glad to leave Fort Irwin / NTC.

I'm not exactly sure, I will ask Mr. Morrison tomorrow. I'm tempted to make a big issue about this and see what the regiment thinks about it. I'm sure I'll be on their doo-doo list but thats fine. Neil and myself are meeting CWO4 McCutcheon tomorrow at 9am at the airfield to check out the Cobra, I'll ask him then. I have a feeling the donations would go through the regiment and they would use filter them to some other use, rather than the museum, thats my take.
