The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Armor in cinema: "The Day the Earth Stood Still"...

...was aired here the other night. M24 Chaffees rush to encircle the alien spacecraft and otherwise defend the mall in Washington. Lovely bit of cold war "readiness" on film as the Chaffees made a wild dash out of the fort at speed, fish-tailing out the gate like Fangio at the la source hairpin at Spa. Nothing like a light tank for making manuvers usually frowned upon by the MP's!

Of course, what the Chaffees demonstrated in nimble manuvering, they lacked in protection, turning into molten lumps not unlike my own vehicle fires out on the Monogram Plains during the Battle of the Revell Depression of 1962 beneath Gort's directed energy weapon.

Also don't forget the 90mm AAA on M2 mounts that were aimed at point-blank range as well as the jeeps armed with .50M2HB fitted with 250-round ammo chests.

'Weed...
Almost certainly...the 3rd Armored Cav was based at Ft. Meade, MD during the time the film was made.

Good catch - "Some of the military scenes in the movie were filmed at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. The 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment supplied the vehicles, equipment, and soldiers for the movie segments depicting Army operations."

And what a shameless unit plug that was! I have a hard time picturing real tanks running around with markings like that on the glacis except for parade duty.

Now I wish I'd watched the movie more closely...the 3rd ACR was only recently integrated at the time ('48, I believe). I think the promo shot with Patricial Neal from Neil's post reflects participation of ALL the troops.

Of most interest is their list of vehicles for rent:

The tanks at the top of Page 1 really caught my attention. To my civilian eyes these look real. But there are many here who really do know about these things.....so i figured i'd better ask the Learned Elders. So are these really M1s? And is that really a Bradley Fighting Vehicle? I didn't think you could go out and *rent* things like that.

I'm no expert on modern armor, but the roadwheels and gun tubes on those "M1's" look suspiciously like 20-pounder Centurion parts. More of those ex-Australian Cents done up for film work. Likewise, the "Bradley" looks to be based on M113 running gear.
