There's a new forum in town: Artillery!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: There's a new forum in town: Artillery!

Hello all, just thought I would let you know that we have started a new forum on "The King of Battle," aka Artillery. Intent of the forum is to cover all kinds of artillery topics - howitzers, field guns, even mortars - particularly ones that dont really fit very well under the category of "Armored Fighting Vehicles" or AFVs in this forum.

Intent really isnt to draw anyone away from this board, but to create a new additional forum for the discussion of artillery topics that technically arent "germane" on this board. For example, all kinds of towed artillery, anti-tank guns, air defense artillery even & perhaps especially coastal artillery and rail gun weapons!

So I've gone ahead and started a few topics on Soviet WWII artillery & some pictures of behind the scenes artillery pieces at the Ordnance Museum. So take a look, post away, etc!

I love that photo! There is a video somewhere of that test. It's at "Camp Desert Rock, Nevada". Not to detract from the 'King of Battle' but this gun would make an interesting direct fire weapon. Fire Command: GUNNER, NUCLEAR, SMALL CITY! Rolling Eyes

I aquired significant video 'footage' covering the entire period of US Nuke testing. Hours of edited and some raw digitalized film footage. My focus was 'Operation Desert Rock VII' in July 1957. Specifically 'SHOT HOOD' which was part of the 'PLUMBOB' Series.

One of the USMC vehicles that took part in that 1957 operation was a LVTP-5, this P-5 ended up at the Tracked vehicle repair training center at Camp Del Mar CA and that sucker was still "hot" in 1961, the joke at the school was during your shower turn the lights out and check if you glowed in the dark for the tracked vehicle repairmens students. the port side of the P-5 was a little caved in from the blast! Thought I was dead didn't ya Dontos...Ha!....#%&^$ pigs!

Just to clarify, can we agree that if it's self-propelled then it remains in this forum? It seems to me it wouldn't be right if we had stuff like the Ontos, StuH, Wespe, M40 etc. split between forums.

Self Propelled and Armored to a degree. Maintaining the "A" in "AFV".

Good to see you're still up & kicking !

I do have some clips of the LVTP-5's moving thru the Desert, during the post-blast assault.

I also have a (per-blast)scene of an M26, which was used (unmanned) as part of earlier equipment test. In same test, an Ontos was also used, but no images, unfortunately.

Yeah, in theory self-propelled artillery "could" be covered on the Artillery Forum. But in general I've been avoiding posting anything about self-propelled items over there - focusing instead on towed pieces...

I'd suggest role rather than whether it's "self-propelled" or not should define what it it, though we've never been really picky about items like M-107's or M-110's rearing their heads in this forum either. We're not that pedantic here in the DG...whichever forum one prefers to post SP arty in should be fine. Railroad arty has even been known to appear here on occasion, but now it's got a better place to roost, thanks to Neil.

Towed stuff will clearly be more appropriate in the arty forum, not that anyone would ever have been busted for posting about it here. We're kinda' casual about stuff like this as long as the tone is consistant with C-C norms. Heck, it's all good. Wink
