M114 for Roy, Doug and Jim discussion -split from ALCO topic
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Doug!

Will work on the hanging around bit. Thanks for the M114 photo.
That vehicle is a bit different from any I seen before. It looks like the
ammo box for the 20mm is mounted on the side of the gun cradle.
Roy, Sgt Scouts out!

Roy,
I'm not sure that's an ammo box. At hi res it looks like it might be an instrumentation or camera mount of some kind. Seems to have vibration dampers for feet and maybe even cooling fins on top. I don't have any 20mm time, so don't know how the box is supposed to look. Screen for (presumably) ammo feed tray looks kinda' iffy. Is that normal?

Maybe a jury-rigged setup?

That is the M114A1E1 test vehicle fitted with an original Rh202 cannon.

Jim,
I'm having difficulty locating any documentation that anything other than the H-S 20mm system was use on these, even in test phase. Can you help with that?
D.

I have an original ordnance, image that I have cropped unfortunately that stated according to my notes, that it was the test vehicle for the Rh202 cannon.

I'll see if I have the original image squirrelled away somewhere.

I remain open to correction, but I believe the weapon pictured is in the M139 (H-S 820) family as installed on the "Twister"...

media.photobucket.com/...er.jpg?o=2

and XM734 (Hunnicutt "Bradley', pg258).

It also most closely resembles (without the feed trays) the M139 installed on the M114A1E1 on page 230-231 (which is vehicle #145, while the one posted here is vehicle #143) and #144 is shown on color plate page 419 with the M139. The "M113 1/2" is also pictured in "Bradley" with a dummy gun and an M139. I also have other pics of the "M113 1/2" with the M139, but no RH202.

I would not be prepared to say that an RH202 was never mounted experimentally on an M114, but have yet to see a published picture and would like to be convinced that one is shown above. I believe that a comparison of all the images mentioned will show the similarity is much greater to the H-S weapon.
