Hey All

Just found this photo, I took in 1986 while on a '1K Zone' tour. Got a couple of others, if anyone is interested?

Nice,

One of these days I'm going to go back to Germany and cross into the former DDR at the exact spot where we did foot patrol. Last two times I made it to Germany (1998 and 2002) didn't have the time to do it.

Here is another.... Taken as 'we' approached the East/West boundry, during '1k Zone' tour.

Can anyone spot the possible 'international incident' which I just realized while editing this photo?

It never occured to us at the time.....

The troop on the other side of the actual border post taking the picture Shocked .

Can't say I didn't violate that rule, although mine was to urinate on their side Twisted Evil

Don't know how many times I would have to explain that the fence was not the actual border and a person still had to make it past the "Barbour Pole" to be safe in the West to folks that were never there.

That isn't it, but close....
(The East German Guard took shots of us taking photos of him. We were not prohibited from taking pictures.)

We would have done that, but the presence of the guards & there 'work crew' (with the red, 'Death tape') kept us from getting that idea.

There were 3 East German Guards present doing the 'over watch'. The Officer in charge is hiding in the brush off to the left and the 3rd was with the work detail off to the right, closer to the fence.

An interesting fact, I first learned on this tour.

Probably '66-'67. They didn't deploy to An Khe until late '65, and relocated to Quang Tri / Camp Evans Combat Base in Northern "I" Corp for Tet, '68, so that's before spring was out.

They later came back south to III Corps in Parrott's Beak border area. Our ACT (2/11th Cav) was usually OPCON'd to the 1st Cav in '71-'72 period under TRAC (Third Region Assistance Command)

You all are inside the 50 meter zone without a Border Patrol escort who would know were the border was in relation to all the markings. The bus could be inside E. Germany.

We were legally located on the western side of the border trace.

The 'tour' was guided by an NCO from 11th ACR who was assigned to this sector. He is seen on the right side of the bus, in BDU's. He was also armed with an M1911A1 in a shoulder holster.

(Hint: You are the right track, but the wrong direction,.....)

Just a guess but the East German soldier next to the roadblock shouldn't be that close? (What would the other guards do if he bolted for your bus?)

Bob,

I think you hit on it. He isn't that close, he looks like he's across the line in the West if the "Barbour Pole" in the middle of the road is actually a border marker. I couldn't tell he was a Grenze Guard until Don said so and I enlarged the picture, that's why I thought he was a troop.

Shoot him....

Bob seems to be on the right track AND in the right direction.....
Mr. Green

The East German guard is actually standing on the west side of the pavement painted white stripe. HE IS IN WEST GERMANY.
