M48A3 Mod B shot by John Charvat at Ft. Riley.

kcamps.org/gallery2/ma...emId=17394

It used to sit up on Custer Hill out front of 1-4 CAVs SHQ. It was put in storage for awhile and is now back out on display. Sorry, he didn't get any numbers off of it.

I think someone is telling you tales. I'm pretty sure all the ones the RVN had were left in country, except for maybe a couple the NVA sent to Moscow.

Looks like bumper number is 1st Armored Division. What's up with that?

If I'm not mistaken, the one at the Patton Museum with 69th Ar. markings came back via the Ha Noi gov't under some "special circumstances" private enterprize dealy. Certainly I don't think it was brought back during the withdrawal.

Don, Garry, Neil or somebody will be along shortly to tell me if I'm remembering this all wrong.

Well, there's been a brigade of 1AD at Riley for about 12 years.

re: the markings - I imagine the 1st AD stuff is from their brigade being at Ft. Riley, but I see the battalion indicator is 2/34 Armor. In the RVN the 2/34AR was organic to the 25th Infantry Division ("psychodelic strawberry"). An acquaintance was a medic with 2/34AR about the time of the drive into Cambodia. He had a great series of slides of the M48A3 nicknamed "Southern Comfort".

I didn't know that there was an M48A3 down there. I'm only aware of the one at Knox, this one and one on a USMC base in the desert - all te rest either stayed in Asia or gor rebuilt in M48A5s.

The M48A3 at Fort Riley came from Vietnam along with the one at the Patton Museum (Former ARVN IIRC).

The one in the Patton museum arrived when General Maggart was the Armor School Commander, who by coincidence, served in Vietnam with 2-69 Armor Confused .

The M48A3 at Fort Riley stayed stored for a little while near the Mounted Cavalry unit's stables until being moved up on Custer Hill. It sat in front of the Battalion HQ's of 2-34 Armor, which had served in Vietnam. I used to walk by it everyday along with that Sherman seen in the background, which sat next to 1-34 Armor's BN HQ's (I was in 1-34). Both these battalions were 1st ID when I was there (I left in 2002). The Riley M48 was very much complete and with a little work could've been made operational IMO. I hated seeing her parked outside. I'm sure with all the time that has passed she's deteriorated quite a bit inside. Nice to see she's out on display again.

Thanks for sharing.

So where is the M48A3 located now at Fort Riley?

Furthermore, is there another M48 on post? I have two listed in the AFV Register - an "M48" "in bad shape" and an M48A3 "in front of the orderly room of 2-34 Armor." I also have an M47 Patton listed in front of 1-34 Armor...

Finally, is the Sherman Jumbo still on post? For some reason I had info it was headed to Fort Knox? - though I'm wondering if I meant to say Hood...

No new Jumbo here. Just the one that is in the LST building, which many of 'ya'll' have seen from past visitations.

Neil,

There was an M48 in front of the Cavalry Museum on main post when I left. She was in pretty sad shape and looked like a range refugee. There also was one in the impact area close to the old tank gunnery East range. There were two M47's on post when I left, one was the infamous "Green Apple" my extra duty clowns painted which took quite some time to correct, I believe Tanker2010 posted a more recent picture of her. The other used to be operational back in the mid 80's and was owned by 1-63 AR, who became 2-34 AR in 1987. Last time I seen her (2002) she was down the road on Custer Hill just past 2-70 AR BN HQ's. Serial number was 8694 based on the data plate.

This is the only M48 I've ever sen on post. It it sits in front of 2-34AR 1AD now. The M4A3E8 sitting nect to it used to sit in front of the Cav Museum. The 2 M47s are at the flag pole on Custer Hill. From `93 to `04 I spent a lot of time running around Riley hunting vehicles. I never saw a Jumbo. The only Jumbo I've seen stateside was at Ft. Carson.

This was where the M48 was, 39.062954, -96.782062

This was where the hard target M48 and some APC was, 39.192694, -96.715232.

Here is where the museum stored their US vehicles. 39.060321, -96.781778
They had an 8" towed howitzer and an M41 for a while too.

This lot held all the Iraqi equipment that the 1st ID brought back from Desert Storm, 39.060342, -96.782389.

I know this area since this is where TASC was and where we drew MILES, Hoffmans, and the dreaded TWGGSS.

I was at Riley three times in the last 20 years and never seen or heard of a Jumbo either.

Probably a mistaken double-listing from Carson... Thanks...
