Each launcher fired an HC (Smoke) and WP (White Phousphorus) simultaneously. I think I heard something of them being only smoke later on. We can't be using WP because it might hurt someone. Early on these were called XM-176 Grenade Projectors and that was later changed to M176 Grenade launchers. Personally I never saw one of these grenades.
To my Knowledge the M176 was used exclusively with the M551 but could be subbed with the M226 system which was used on the M60A2. The nomenclature being assigned to the actual tube and grenade assembly, not the projector/launcher mounted to the tank since it was an entire system in itself. M226 used two standard M8 HC grenades designed to pop after launching. Had a TC long time ago who told me they used to open them to get the grenades out when he was on M60A2's.
