#1: 3/8 Cav Author: MarkHolloway, Location: Beatty, NevadaPosted: Fri Jun 26, 2009 12:14 am ---- I was reading that 3/8 Cav was a 3rd AD armor unit at Gelnhausen and not the divisional cav. My question is did they replace 1/33 Armor or were they an additional battalion?

All those 3AD CAV units were former Armor Battalions reflagged. Gelnhausen had 1-33 and 3-33 and became squadrons in 8th CAV IIRC.
Only real CAV unit in the division at that time was our 3-12 at swinging Budingen

In 1986-87, 3rd AD did a number of unit redesignations.
At Kirchgons, (1st Bde), 2/36 Inf & 3/36 Inf became 3/5 Cav & 5/5 Cav. The units were not true CAV, but remained Mech Inf. The 2 Armor Bns were 2/32 Ar & 4/32 Ar. (4/32 AR was redesignated from 2/5 CAV following a 'COHORT' move from 1st CAV DIV, Ft Hood)
At Gelnhausen, (3rd Bde), 1/33 Ar & 3/33 Ar became 3/8 Cav & 4/8 Cav. Again not true CAV, but Armored Cav.
A side note: 4/8 Cav competed in the 1987 Canadian Army Trophy (CAT) Competition, and recorded the first U.S. 'Win' in the history of the NATO Tank Gunnery Competition.
Oh, BTW....In Dec 1992, 1/67 Ar,(3rd Bde), 1st CAV DIV became 3/8 CAV. I was in C Co 3/8 CAV from 1992-94.
Confused ....? I seemed to have been in or around all of this reflagging, as it happened.
Regards
Don
