Most of the tank components used are from the M48/M48A1

The M53/M55 artillery pieces were based on the M46/M47 chassis and not the later M48/M48A1 chassis.

Presumably there was a provision for driving it from within the turret?

That side hatch and the vision blocks at the top left side of the turret is the driver's station.
