#1: Outstandingly Effective and Ineffective Infantry Weapons Author: J.McGillivray, Posted: Sat Aug 20, 2011 1:24 pm ---- There is a book that came out recently called “Canadians Under Fire; Infantry Effectiveness in the Second World War” by Robert Engen. The book is based on an analysis of Battle Experience Questionnaires completed by Canadian Infantry Officers.
The section of the questionnaires dealing with weapons is interesting. After asking which weapons were used by the officers’ unit it asks:
“Have you found any of these weapons outstandingly effective?”
and
“Have you found any of these weapons ineffective?”
Which were the top four weapons rated “outstandingly effective” and the bottom four rated “ineffective”?

The “ineffective” weapon identified by the greatest number of officers was the Sten SMG., followed by the pistol, the 2in mortar and the No. 69 grenade.
