Here is a idea I have been thinking about, someone made one that works. I was going to try to build one with a different design but I like his build. The youtube video is in spanish but if you fast forward to the 2:45 mark..I think you will get the idea. Imagine where we can go with this...
With new small super magnets, like N52 (neodymium) that have a lifting power of about 50 lbs for a 1 inch by 1 1/4 magnet, we can utilize this for many applications including motors, electric generators and magnetic brakes.

You can achieve more accelerations with conventional black powder.
