It's a local modification. The cable drum for the A-frame replaced the gun inside the turret. I recall reading about it and I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures on the web. I'll check and get back to you.

Thanks Costas. It is a one-off modification as I suspected. It does have Korea wrote on it with no date. I got this photo from the Jarrett collection at US Army MHI in Carlisle, PA. Rick

You are welcome. Apparently though, it's not just an one-off, but an official ROKA conversion. It's mentioned in Jane's AFV Recognition Handbook (1987 edition) as well as the Ian Allan M48 book by Geoffrey Tillotson. And these are just the two books I just took a look at. There should be more.
