Hi All,

We’ve added gallery of photos of the M4A3(76) HVSS on display at VFW Post 2174 in Westville, NJ. I have the last four digits of the SN from the rear tow lug, but couldn’t see the first - looks like ?7072. Also on display are a 57mm AT Gun and a 3” AT Gun. Our first post of a Monument vehicle in NJ! Maybe we’d have more if you could make a left turn in the dang state! Smile Seriously NJ and MI - what is up with the whole left turn thing?

not sure that it is really 7072, because 57072 and 67072 doesn't fit, and I'm sure this tank has been built by Chrysler after November, 1944.

7072 looks right, I might even say that it is 47072 based on a cross marking visible in the photo above. The trouble is, I don't think that number was issued . . .

could well be 67672, which would make it an M4A3(76) HVSS built in March, 1945.

Could be. I was just looking at my photos and the "6" on DTA tanks had a rather deep impression on the top stroke of the loop that I would've expected to see.

We should not limit the possibilities to HVSS or 76mm tanks. It could have started out as any variety of large hatch M4A3.

well, thanks to the differential housing welding, we are sure that the hull was manufactured by Chrysler. It has the late glacis pattern, which appeared at Chrysler in November, 1944. Then, I'm pretty sure it was built as an HVSS tank. Then there are not many possibilities for a tank made by Chrysler after November 1944, and with the 2nd digit of the serial number being a 7...

Thanks for the research and info, gents!

Could it be that the last number is missing? Could it be 7072X instead? Taking another look at the lug, there is a mark after the 4 numbers we can see that might be another digit. Is that possible/likely?

Edit - I zoomed in a bit and the last digit might be a 9. Would 70729 work?
