He didn't think it was the SN, but it was the only visible means of IDing the vehicle for the paperwork.
The funny thing is that when I asked the curator of the ARNG museum at Camp Robinson about the whereabouts of the Charleston and Mena M40s (prior to actually tracking them down by legwork) the 'official' documents for AFV locations for the state had no info.
