S! Skyrider, and welcome....

The majority of us, including myself, have only set up CFS3 throough a router so as to be able to play online on the CFS3 server. For setting it up on a home network to do internal games, I am not exactly sure what tricks may be necessary simply becuase I haven't done it. However, you do want to at least make sure that you've set up the following ports on your router for CFS3 I believe:

Trigger port.............Public port......................Protocol
2300 ......................28883-28886,2300............. UDP
28883 UDP............. 28883-28886,2300............. UDP
28884 UDP............. 28883-28886,2300............. UDP
28885 UDP............. 28883-28886,2300............. UDP
28886 UDP............. 28883-28886,2300............. UDP

...and you may have to enable port forwarding for the second machine.....that's about all I know and I'm on the edge of my own experience here so I don't know what else I can offer to you.

As for squads....well, an excellent topic! Our own squad and a few others here were once VERY actve in CFS3, not so much anymore these days, however there were very few if any bomber squads around, not that it didn't happen at one time or another. Most squads are fighter squads simply becuase that befits the purpose of most squads, to be involved in air combat matches and competitions....and noone ever designed a competition or bomber match scenario for squads, to my knowledge. I imagine most of your activities would be mission-based so make sure you get the mission builder if you don't have it already?

However, the best advice I can give you based on experience is, the multiplayer arena is the place to start and recruit a squad. This is what works and you'll find the folks who aren't in squads already.....I have seen many squads start up and attempt to recruit on forums, but most forum folks are already in a squad of some type.

The online multiplayer arena is really where the rubber meets the road for this step and a "presence" there by hosting games and missions will give you the best shot at meeting people with the same interests, or at least give you an indication for what level of interest exists for your specific idea, so best of luck! Hope this helps!

I seem to remmeber seeing a squad around cfs3 alot that stuck to themselves mostly doing bomber type stuff and those type of missions,,,,,,flew with them on a few occasions and they seemed like good people....I couldn't say if they are still around but the squad was named MOG.....(missions operations group),,,maybe they are still active.....

Thanks for the replys fellows.

Reply1. Mostly bombers but I do fly fighters too.
Reply2. This one may be more difficult to do but I'll look in to it.
I'll check out MOG but in the mean time what squads do you all have and what is involved.
Thanks again for the info.

S! Skyrider.....well, as to what squads "we" have, Com-Central is comprised of many different squads with interest in different sims and such, and only a few here are (or were) CFS3 squads. IMS, RM and the JG300 are the ones I'm thinking of right now that had (and sometimes still have) a presence in CFS3 from time to time.

However the "salad days" of CFS3 squad action seem to be behind us, sadly. Most of the action is in IL2/FB/Pacific Fighters, there's a world of difference in online activity there.

CFS3 is still a fine sim, and still the personal preference of some other diehards here, and (if I may say so) JG300 also happens to be the oldest axis-oriented squad for CFS3 (founded just before the release of the sim). So we've seen a lot of faces and squads come and go. The online activity in CFS3 was fairly slim the last time I looked and that sums up some fairly slim pickin's to form a squad with...since it really takes a lot of luck to get a good cohesive group of people together with the same common interests and - more importantly - attitudes.

There aren't any organized competitions anymore for it (unless I'm missing something new), which kinda takes away from the most visible purpose of a squad, going up to fly in some way against another team or teams, etc.

Some of us could probably write a book about how to start and run a squad, it's an interesting road, to be sure. Essentially you need good people (by far the most important thing), patient and dedicated leaders, and always try to keep it fun!

Take your time finding good folks with fun-loving and mature attitudes and that's 90% of the battle tho...best of luck!

What Stoopy said...and...if you're lucky, you still hook up with guys who you enjoy other sims with and just hangin' out. The activity may change, but the people don't have to...

Right.....was it Hoppa or 1Bullet that coined it best......it's not WHAT you fly, but who you fly it with!

been with the same squad and same bud's for over 6 years now, the words "find good people" and "keep it fun" are the key points..along with finding a great community like we have here at CC to meet some outstanding squads and people to do this stuff with.

Dangit. I find myself thinking about this topic and getting all sentimental and misty now. All the fine, excellent pilots of our own squad and the things we've done and been through. Without, I might add, the benefit of opposable thumbs, which is really saying something. Brings a tear to my swine eye. Stop looking at me like I'm a sissy, now. Can't help it. I must tip my cap to my squadmates over the years, and I can't even bring myself to start naming names because I won't stop. And this is about more than just one group anyway. Darn it all.

SkyriderPA, g'wan out there and hit the skies and meet all the folks you can who are flying and looking for some action. If it isn't CFS3, get thee to another combat flight sim. But take your time with the people and the concept. Don't rush too fast. Chat 'em up real good and get a feel for the people you run into regularly, bring up the idea of a squad, and come up with a basic, reasonable and adult code of conduct and at least one flight test that all (including yourself) will have to pass to give an initial sense of accomplishment and pride for starters. Treat them with utmost respect because it's their time and commitment too and without them, there IS no squad. Look out for their interests at all times, be willing to forgo yours for another time and place unless it's copasetic with the group direction, and don't be afraid to boot out the inevitable surly knobs you may run into, one bad apple can take down a whole group, it happens. And (my own recommendation) choose a fitting animal character as the group "totem". I'd recommend 'Ze Wilde Sau' but it's taken...permanently!

You'll meet some fantastic people that you'll never really meet and remember 'em for the rest of your life!
