Front page story on the Ottawa Citizen 11 Feb says the CF has eliminated French language training and tech manuals for the 105mm AGS as a way to accellerate delivery and reduce "Canadianization" costs. It seems the vehicles will all go to the Lord Strathcona's Horse in Edmonton, and it is an English language unit. If it was to be issued to all three armoured units, the manuals would have to be in French and English.

The Strats are to become a multi-purpose fire effects unit with AGS and ADATS. Eight-wheeled firepower and M113-tracked anti-air/long range missiles. It is to be the firepower element in the armoured corps, while the Royal Canadian Dragoons and 12e Regiment Blinde du Canada specialize on Coyote recce. This streamlining of functions is also occuring in the infantry battalions. The 3rd Bn of each of the 3 regular infantry regiments is light infantry with a para company. One other company is tasked for Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations. (Don't know about the 3rd rifle company in the light battalions.) The other two battalions are more conventionally mechanized in LAV IIIs.

General Dynamics Canada is currently building the first prototype LAV III
ADATS vehicle as we speak. The hull has been converted using old APC-001 the very first Gen III Lav built for Canada. Prior to becoming the new ADATS prototype, it was used as the Risk Reduction Unit for the latest TUA LAV III. GD keeps APC-001, and APC -002 as Government owned Guinea pigs, on Loan agreements for R&D work.
APC-002 is currently configued as the CENG Risk Reduction Unit. (Canadian Engineering Vehicle).
The Turrets from APC-001 and 002 went onto the last of the FOO units for Canada.
All the M113 tracked ADATS will be phased out once production is started on the LAV III version and the Turrets used on the LAV III's. Similar to the TUA turrets coming off M113 TUA's.
The ADATS Prototype Hull, is destined to go to Orlikon in Montreal in March to have the Weapon system integrated by Orlikon, and to make a demonstrator out of it.

I'll keep you posted

LavTech, do you work in London? Back in 2000 (when I was a reporter) I got to visit and drive a LAV III on the track. It was pretty cool. Unfortunately, I didnt bring a camera (what was I thinking!) and the DDGM folks never sent the pics they took to me! Lotta fun though.
