Specialist Kibbey would like to thank you for that promotion that is now 35 years(!) overdue. Wink (Actually, it was on it's way at ETS, but I opted for college....and college girls.....

It's good to see Jeff and I have plenty of subordinates to send out for more when the keg runs dry (yeah...like we're gonna' let someone else drive. Rolling Eyes )

They've got enough crap on there...they could almost be...tankers! Shocked

I count 11 helmets and if I'm not mistaken, that was the capacity for these vehicles with crew. Can anyone identify what some of the boxes might contain? And how about that bumper ID? In Spec4 Kibbeys case, I believe Jack and Ginger-Ale would be stached in a secret compartment on the vehicle while I am the beer guy. Where was it you kept that again Doug?

Ummmm.....errrr.....D'OH!!!!!

Sorry about the inadvertent promotion.

(Maybe military rank is like a bank account? If you leave it alone for a while it grows due to compound interest?)

(I suppose i could have titled the post "Sgt. Button and driver grab a few friends and go for a ride".....!)

My guess would be that those four large carboard boxes on the top edge of the side are combat rations. WWII version of MREs. I think that was the version before C-ration came out. Razz
As for the rest, could be almost anything. Confused
Anyone else notice the canteen cup hanging on the top of the front edge of the wind shield cover? Shocked

The WWII halftrack, the first SUV/RV all in one vehicle.

The 5 follow by the triangle stands for the 5th Armored Division.
The 46I stands for the 46th Infantry Battalion. The halftracks means the 46I is the 46th ARMORED Infantry Battalion.

Spot report!

Looks like tents rolled up on the fenders...maybe a grenade crate and ammo boxes up front. Cases of K or C-rats in the mine racks on the sides...

A ma-Duece poking out the front, a .30 cal next to the mortar and probably another one on the other side.

And that building in the background looks rather hot!

a .30 cal next to the mortar

Hi 68! Hi Folks!

Mortar? I don't see any mortar tube. I see something I think is butt of a M1 rifle stock sticking up. Shocked

Confuzed!

Looks like an inverted rifle butt to me...with sling. And I think it has a contour in the right place where the trigger hand grasps it.

Could you even get all those guys (and stuff) in there with a mortar?

A couple of other reasons why I don't think it's a mortar track. Most mortar tracks were the M4A1 variety, based on the M2 halftrack chassis. This one looks to be an M3, not an M2. Although there was an M21 mortar track built on the M3 chassis (with mortar firing forward, not rearward like in the M4A1), the pintle mounted .50 is about where the front of the mortar tube would be on an M21. Just my opinion, FWIW....

Okay, so it's not a mortar tube.....but just for arguments sake, why would you ride around in a combat zone with your weapon, that Garand (or what ever it is!), muzzle down and trapped between yourself and the side of the vehicle?

And even if it's not a mortar track...doesn't mean a mortar crew couldn't hitch a ride!

I think I can make out the muzzle of another weapon in the grip of the soldier closest (in the enlargement)...perhaps this is a recovered weapon? in a scabbard? maybe he doesn't care or there's no foot room for the butt of the weapon on the floor?
