#1: 120mm gun APFSDS penetration? Author: mike_Duplessis, Posted: Wed Jun 07, 2006 2:39 pm ---- Here's a number I don't recall running across.
Does anybody know the penetration stats for the U.S. 120mm gun? Not asking for any super-secret info, I just assume there's number floating out there somewhere.

Author: C_Sherman, Posted: Thu Jun 08, 2006 2:50 am ---- I'm pretty sure the actual numbers are classified, but I recall an article or two when they were first introduced. The numbers I remember were in excess of a foot for armor steel, rather than inches. I don't think they mentioned Depleted Uranium (DU) penetrators, so I might guess this is for tungsten darts. Not much help, I know...
As it turns out, these penetration numbers were actually a driving force in the development of composite (Chobham-type) armors. Or "armours" if you prefer. The thickness of steel required to defeat a sabot projectile became so prohibitive in terms of weight and thickness that alternative armors were the only option. Obviously that worked out OK for the Abrams, Challenger, and Leos.

They stress on the site that they're only working with estimates, but:
US M829A3 120mm DU 765mm at 2km (200x) (Russian estimate 795mm)
US M829A2 120mm DU 730mm at 2km (1994)
US M829A1 120mm DU 610mm at 2km (1991) (Russian estimate 700mm)
US M829 120mm DU 552mm at 2km (1988)
US M827 120mm DU 450mm at 2km (1986)
Compared to:
Ukraine 125mm Vitiaz round 760mm at 2km (2002)
Russian 125mm BM-4? tungsten 800mm at 2km (200?)
Russian 125mm BM-42M tungsten 600mm at 2km (1991) (22:1 L/D)
