The reason so many Germans had over 200 kills is because most started collecting them during the Spanish civil war and remained in front line duty until they were either killed, captured or wounded to the point that they couldn't fly. The US pilots were on a strict rotation, and our brass was smart to realize that an ace who is alive is a better teacher to young pilots then a dead one.

but yea, Hartmann and them were fighting the russians for the entire length of the war
