I am a member of the Odessa Citizens on Patrol and we do this a lot. It is dangerous and we accept the risk to help our community. He also worked for the FAA, and served in the Army in Vietnam

Certainly, fatalities and accidents involving vehicle operations near police officers, road crews and citizens - particularly volunteers - caused by individuals who simply can't operate a vehicle sanely, are one of the worst tragedies.
In particular, the quote at the bottom of the obituary was very thoughtful.
