This is the first music that attracted me from MoTown (which I still love, and is immortal) to something from my own ethnic group (which is totally a misnomer, because this guy was heavily influenced by gospel).
I still remember the liner notes, which had an anecdote to the effect of the producers telling him "you need twelve songs to record an album, but you don't know twelve songs." So, he wrote some.
Link says '67, but I think I was hearing this on AM Radio by '66.
