O/T A Mortar Special for SFC Buttons!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I read this and immediately though of our resident "High Angle Hell" Specialist. I wonder what would happen if you fired one at an M-1? (Had to get armor in here somehow)?

Silly Tanklord...everybody knows that the thin, vulnerable roof armor of the M1 is no match for the plummeting fire of the dreaded "bowling ball Abrams-killer". Rolling Eyes

(Neil is likely to be mightily put out with you for not posting this in the artillery forum, so a "thread move" might be imminent...he's got the awesome moderator tools, too, ya' know.) Wink

Neil, please move this to Artillery forum. I forgot there was a special place for red legs and gun bunnies!

Very Interesting set-up there.
The Army is working to develop a precision guided 120mm mortar round, the ATK 120mm Precision Guided Mortar Munition (PGMM). This round can land within 2 meters of its target at over 7 kilometers away. This means a mortar crew can hit its target with 1-2 rounds rather than a half dozen rounds needed for adjustments and fires for effect (FFE). As of November 2007, the program was still unfunded with the main reason being the rounds cost, $9,000 per round.
The 155mm, GPS guided round, "Excaliber" is in theater currently, albeit in small numbers, (a few hundred rds). The Army was wanting to order 1,200 more rounds but again, costs are the main issue. The current rounds cost nearly $100,000 each! But Raytheon says they are trying to cut the cost down to $30,000 each. In 2005, the Army ordered 165 Excaliber rds for 22 million dollars. In 2006, 335 rds for 42.7 million. And in 2007, 725rds for 64.7 million dollars.
Fort Sill is conducting a large study looking at things other than just costs. Todays battlefield requires "surgical presision" to avoid civilian casualties, and therefore doctrine and tactics may drive the need, rather than costs alone.
Mind you, most of this information is now, 1.5 years old. It was the lead story of the 12 November 2007 Army Times paper. And for what its worth, a PGMM 120mm HE rounds falling at terminal velocity onto ANY armor vehicle, will do alot more than just scratch the paint!
