Units Change Designations in Baumholder, Schweinfurt
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

2nd Brigade, 1AD in Baumholder will change to 170th Infantry Brigade. 1-35 Ar will become 4-70 Ar.

2nd Brigade, 1ID in Schweinfurt will change to 172nd Infantry Brigade. 1-77 Ar will become 3-66 Ar. The Schweinfurt units are in the process of moving to Graf.

This Stars & Stripes article says both these units are still slated to return to CONUS in 2012-2013, although earlier articles said Baumholder would become an enduring post.

Hi Folks!

The 170th and the 172th Inf BCTs must be the two brigades that are to remain in Europe to meet up coming commitments with our Allies. If so, one will in up at Ft. Bliss, Texas and the other one will end up at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

With the stand down of the 2nd BCT, 1AD, I think that means the 1st Armored Division will be out of Europe?

The 3rd BCT is at Ft. Riley. The 1st BCT is in Iraq along with the Division Headquarters and both should be moving to Ft. Bliss, Texas when their tours end.

One more round of the shell game.

I'd love to know what all of this redesignation does. The 172nd apparently is in Alaska (if not Iraq) right now. The 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division is supposed to be standing up at Fort Knox. Mind boggling Neutral

Hi Mark! Hi Folks!

Mark, you are a turn behind on the shell game. The 172nd Stryker BCT was reflaged as the 1st SBCT, 25th Infantry Division after it returned from Iraq last year.

At this time, there is NO 172nd Brigade.

More reflaging news/or the next round in the shell game:

On March 7th the 4th BCT of the 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood Texas STOOD DOWN.

Troops and equipment then stood up as the 4th BCT of the 1st Cavarly Division.

That was quick. Stood down at Ft. Bliss on the 4th of March and stood up again on the 7th of March.

To me, this current transformation/shell game is destorying currrent unit links to their passed histories.

Spot Report and my 2 cents about the current reflaging rounds.

And what do they gain? Makes no sense to me. I do understand now why the unit patch is held on with velcro Neutral
