Romanian Military Museum: Shermies, MkIV's, an' stuff....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Great items! I believe the horizontal barrelled weapon is a Nordenfeldt Gun, the rotary five-barrel a Hotchkiss and the weapon with carriage appears to be a Mitrailleuse of some sort - perhaps even a Montigny Mitrailleuse. Truly an interesting assortment of weapons.

Alan

Yes, I think the rotary is a Hotchkiss, didn't see any magazines or slots though, I assumed it was a one-shot-per, then manual reload. I might have pics of info plates, was trying not to clutter the armor stuff with OT stuff. My pics are out of sequence as I was trying to "husband" my memory card, which is not very systematic, but you never know what you might need to sacrifice when you find something more interestng to shoot! I'll sort through my stuff.

Maybe we can appeal to Ossie for more info since he's going soon!

I was thinking the horizontal barrelled weapon looked like the Nordenfeldt that we have at Aberdeen. I don't know if Neil has any pictures or not.

The rotary wepons look like typical Gatling type weapons of the time. There was usually a bin or a stick magazine used to feed them

Aint that the truth! Though I may have to lambast Doug for several months for not taking more images....

Cool

Whew! OK, thought we'd lost you there for minute. We expect updates and pictures....and we don't mean wedding pictures!

Since who doesn't love multi-barrel implements of destruction, I'll take this opportunity to wander off topic with a few pics from the previous visit of a few that caught my eye...like this early Naval five-barrel thingy that looked about right for raking the decks of the other guy (or as early AA):

...or an early rotary-barrel 37mm design, of which they had a couple (these were not high ROF designs or anything, compared to what we think of as Gatling designs, after the five fired, it was manual reload time):

THIS was in the building that houses the uniform collection...a 37-barrel...well, not so much a "machine gun" as an early version of what we'd call "metalstorm", since my understanding is that all the barrels would only fire simultaneously. I was there early in the morning and the devastatingly cute docent in that area had no other visitors and obligingly moved the ropes for better access. I have a flash shot of the breech area, but this brightened one without flash is better. The big brass catcher is interesting, they must have really needed to recover the brass for this thing, I'm guessing. I don't know if there was a "loading block" like a "speedloader" or something or if each was emplaced one at a time by hand. The big ammo bins on either side looked like they might have held something like that, but I didn't see any.

Nice T-55, TR-85 and TR-85M1 pics! Thanks!

Shame they can´t "trim their bush" though. Makes no sense to have that high brush around there. Oh, well, could be worse.

Hey! Where is Ossie and his pics? He should be back by now, methinks.

Ossie,
Here is the museum website - it appears to be working.

muzeu.mapn.ro/

"Informatii" appears to have location information.

This & other websites indicate it is located at str. Mircea Vulcanesu (fosta Stefan Furtuna) nr. 125 - 127
www.ici.ro/romania/ro/...litar.html

Neil

As Neil said, and as I indicated in earlier post from a map I had:

Ossie,
It's at str. Mircea Vulcanescu, nr. 125-127, Sector 1 between Calea Plevnei and Dinicu Golescu Telephone 00 40 21 212 60 15

Hours are 0900-1700 Tuesday-Sunday. Closed Mondays.

It's just across the street from the backside of the military hospital too, if that helps. Taxis seemed to have no problem knowing this location, it's a big place. Print this and Neil's info out and hand it to them. Wink

When in doubt, I stop in a better business hotel, like the Hilton Athenee Palace and get an area map and have the concierge locate the target on the map for the driver.

Deal is that the M4A2 with 75mm didn't get the Wet Stowage ammo provisions. As well as the liquid surrounding the ammo racks, Wet Stowage moved the bulk of the main gun ammo down into the lower hull instead of being in the sponsons overhanging the tracks, so the M4A3 75 and 76mm versions didn't need the extra "patches" on the hull. M4A2 apparently (I haven't been in an M4A2 75 with late hull) kept the original ammo stoage layout, so the ammo racks still needed the extra protection, hence a number of them have late hulls with the applique patches. I believe that these show up with Soviet units and a few with the USMC. That makes this partial hull a bit of an oddity - the 47-degree hull with side applique from the factory.

My issue with the M4A3 and modelers is because Tamiya included the applique parts in their M4A3 kit (and still do) then modelers who don't know their subject keep gluing then on spoiling a number of finely executed models.

Thanks for showing the photos. That front half of a Sherman hull is interesting. You have the remains of one of the "odd ducks" - an M4A2 with the 47-degree hull front AND applique armor. This hull is why Tamiya mistakenly sent (and still sends) applique armor panels with their M4A3 models (and dummies still put them on!). By the way, the tracks may or may not be burned - those are T49 all-steel tracks.

Gary

Could you tell us (or at least, me) more about these, Gary? I'm not well-informed about Shermans and am especially curious about this one.
