Post subject: IP Address Failure

Sunday morning I was doing routine cleanup on my puter. First I ran my AVG and found nothing there, then I ran Disc Clean, then Defrag and as a after thought I ran my Adawre 6 and it found about 15 files that had to do with something called WebHancer(think that name is right...lol). Well trusting Adaware as it has never been wrong before I told it to get rid of all the WebHancer stuff. Adawere said it couldn't rid of two of the files and to reboot would get rid of it. Ok I rebooted and Adaware did something I ain't never seen...it started before any proggys; all by itself there on the screen running. It did it's thing and found nothing so Windows started up and Oh Nooo I couldn't connect to the net but my wifes puter on the same router had no problem...hmmmm. So I rebooted the modem and router and still nothing on my end......hmmmmmmmmmmm. Next step check my network setting and hit repair but got the message " Can not renew IP Address"...hmmmmmmmm getting close to flying time so I did a restore to Saturdays restore point and all worked well for flying time. After that I repeated all steps and again no internet.................hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Uninstalled network card and rebooted still no good after Windows found the card....
Now I'm at a lost. I had to do a restore back to Saturday to get back on the net and write this post. I really don't want to run Adaware and have the same probs so therefore I'm not really sure if that WebHancer is the correct name but I'm about 90% sure that's it. Help me get rid of thing please.
I am running a HP M1160N, ASUSTek MB, AMD 64 3400+, Windows XP Pro Media Edition all updated, Gig of ram, 200 gig HD, Nvidea 6800 GT, onboard sound Sad
If any futher info is required I will do my best to supply it.

THANKS!

Post subject: Re: IP Address Failure

Well Homey...I got some bad news for ya bud

"webHancer Customer Companion resides on the end-user's computer, where it transparently monitors Internet performance. webHancer Customer Companion measures overall network/site delay and the performance times experienced by actual end-users."
Infection method:
The majority of users running WebHancer are not aware they are running it, unless they have noticed system side-effects or unusual data transfers from their machine. WebHancer, like "Comet Curse", falls into the category of "everything-installs-it-can't-get-rid-of-it" foistware, with completely unrelated software secretly installing the WebHancer product on the user's system. (Given this, I think the program should be more aptly called "WebCancer" Smile In one of the most user-hostile moves I've seen in a while, the clandestine WebHancer install will alter critical Registry keys relating to Windows Sockets, causing the system's Internet connection capabilities to break if the user dares to try uninstalling the spy. WebHancer's makers claim not to modify system files (which is, technically, true) although they have confirmed that attempting to remove it will break your system.
Removal procedures:
As noted earlier, simply deleting WebHancer files from your system will result in losing your ability to connect to the Internet. WebHancer modifies your Windows Sockets configuration, binding itself to Winsock so that all packets are passed through WebHancer.

WebHancer's suggested removal method is to make sure WebHancer is installed, and remove it using Windows' Add/Remove Software feature as described at the bottom of WebHancer's installation page. If you have already deleted WebHancer components, the company suggests that you download (or get a friend to download, due to the connectivity problem!) their Customer Companion, fully install it, then use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall.

WebHancer can also be safely removed by pest-removal software such as Spybot Search&Destroy and AD-Aware. These and similar programs are listed on the Pest Removers page.

If you cannot access the Internet and simply need to restore Internet access, try my LSP-Fix program to repair the portion of the registry WebHancer and similar programs like to damage. get it here www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Be warned: Although uninstallation can in some cases go off without a hitch, in other cases it is extremely difficult to remove WebHancer completely

try the LSP-Fix program and if that don't work...I am afraid the ole re-format and re-install Windows is the only option....I will also ask our IT guy at work and see what he say's and let ya know.

ok Homey install the free microsoft antispyware beta, where adware fails that usually sorts things out. www.microsoft.com/atho...fault.mspx i found this to be more usefull than most of the others..
