Preserved Tanks in the USA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I am creating this thread to put together my updates on this project in one place rather than across multiple threads.

Useful example links for searching PreservedTanks.com:

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in the USA

I began by putting online the information and photographs from the manuscript of my unpublished "Preserved Armoured Vehicles: U.S.A." book from c. 1984, starting with APG in 2008-9:

APG: Museum
APG: Maryland Boulevard ('Mile of Tanks')
APG: Solitary Vehicles

Those lists are now somewhat out of date so I will return to update them. Then I began Fort Knox this year:

Fort Knox: Pattom Museum of Cavalry and Armor

While still adding vehicles to that list I began updating ones already online with help and photos from Don and other members of this forum. While working on the M47s there I began various parallel projects, including:

Preserved M47 Tanks
Camp Shelby (with Joe D's photos)
Fort Lewis (with C Sherman's photos)
Chiriaco Summit (with C Sherman's photos)
Fort Irwin (ongoing)

I have now returned to completing the Fort Knox section. The following entries have been added this week:

UID1446: M26 Pershing
UID1447: M26A1 Pershing
UID1448: M46 Patton
UID1449: T23
UID1450: M7B1
UID1451: M7B2
UID1452: M4A3 (museum)
UID1453: M4A3 (on post)
UID1454: M4A3E8 (Keyes Park)
UID1455: M4A3E8 (running order)
UID1456: M4A3E8 (storage)
UID1457: M4A3E8 (Brooks Field)
UID1458: M4A3E8 (Gaffey Hall)
UID1459: M4A3E8 (Brave Rifles Regiment Avenue)
UID1460: M4A3E8 (Cherry Hall)
UID1461: XM1 Abrams

That brings me up to date with the information and photo's I had. I will now begin the process of updating the whole Fort Knox section with the latest additions and changes posted by Dontos and Garry Redmon, including all those related to BRAC. I'll post updates in this thread as I progress.

Meanwhile, to give background to the Fort Knox M3A3 tank (and also M31B2 and M32A1B1 TRVs) I have written up another factory:

Baldwin Locomotive Works

Gentlemen.
Some time ago there was a Swedish APC "Hagglunds PBV 302" at Aberdeen Proving Ground Museum. A while ago someone said that the APC had been moved to another location. Anyone who knows the location of that vehicle today?

I'm pretty certain its the same one at the Military Museum of Southern New England in Danbury, CT - which has a number of other ex Ordnance Museum vehicles.

At any rate, it has a US Army RN painted on the side...

This it turning out to be a huge job. I took the day off work today, and have only managed about half of it. Anyway, here's the new BRAC page:

BRAC Transfer, Fort Knox

This work has included adding the following new entries, vehicles that weren't at FK when I visited in '83, using Dontos' photos:

UID1462: M1A1 inside
UID1463: M1A1 outside
UID1464: Challenger
UID1465: T-72
UID1466: Te-Ke

I have updated a bunch more vehicle entries with recent photos from Dontos, so now the new Fort Benning site is starting to come together quite well:

National Armor and Cavalry Museum, Fort Benning

I'll keep working on the BRAC updates over the next week or so.

Trevor

That is a lot of work. It looks good.

One note though, in the BRAC Transfer link you have a caption of the Sd Kfz 223 being loaded. its misidentified as a Sd Kfz 222.

The destinations to Ft Benning are as follows:
'Sand Hill' (uncovered storage area)
'Harmony Church' (static displays vic Armor Center ?)
'TMP' (overhead covered & secure facility)

The operational / museum displays are supposed to all go to the TMP. These will be joined by several new aquisitions (ie WWI Mark VIII, T34/76, Panther ausf A, ....from APG)

Keep up the good work
Regards
Don

Thanks Don. SdKfz 223 fixed. I've added a Transportation Motor Pool (TMP) location and I'll assign operational and museum vehicles to it as I update them. I'll do the same for Harmony Church as I get more info.

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in the USA

A productive weekend - on Saturday I wrote up 'Buster' and a added bunch of other vehicles at Fort Knox:

UID 1467: M60A1 'Buster'

UID 1468: M60A2

UID 1469: S- Tank

UID 1470: M728

UID 1471: M60

To give some background to Buster, I have added an entry in my list of USA tank facilities for MCLB Albany where it was upgraded:

MCLB Albany

Yesterday I continued the M60 theme:

UID 1472: M60A1 6053

UID 1473: M60A3 3621A

UID 1474: M60A1 4284

UID 1475: M60A3 2394A

UID 1476: M60A3 3854A

UID 1477: M60A1 8587

UID 1478: M60A3 2004A

UID 1479: M60A1 8679

Some of these have since moved to Benning, so I'll update them together once I have them all in the database. My grateful thanks to Don and Joe for letting me rifle through their albums for pictures.

Trevor

The photos you have for UID 1553 are not an afghan FT17 but the previously existing FT17 which was on display in the museum for many years.

The photos are following it being swapped with the Afghan FT17 in the museum, the original tank was transferred to Carlyle Barracks. Those photos are in 2009 when they loaded it up and shipped it out.

FYI: The second Afghan FT17 is pretty much untouched and still tarped up in RMP, without a turret mounted.

Trevor, FYI, there are at least 3 surviving T23s including the ones from APG.
