Post subject: Best computer for Gaming

Hey Guys
I am at the point of upgrading my computer, and what do think is best for gaming, Intel , AMD , CPU? Also I want Windows 7 and more memory to keep up with all the technology in Video cards and of course I am on a budget. At present I have intel 6400 runing at 3.1gig(over clocked) The PS is 550 watts with a 460 Gforce video card XP Pro OS. I don't need the latest stuff costs to much. There should be some good buys with all the new stuff out there. Maybe a good fast mother board some DD3 memory and and middle of the road Video card. Anther thing what video card is best Gforce or the other one.

See the thread right below this one for a recent upgrade I just did - I kept my case, sound card, power supply and DVD-drive, replaced everything else. Popped about $800 for a nice 3.4Ghz Intel i5 CPU (automatically clocks up to 3.8Ghz when needed) living on a solid Gigabyte "Ultra Reliable" series motherboard (Eeeeaaasy overclocking if ya want it) with 8GB of fast RAM and a 1-Terrabyte HD, Windows 7 and 2GB ATI 6850 video card. Eats up FSX, and runs Rise of Flight and Cliffs of Dover *very* respectfully on high settings. Could probably run IL2 1946 and FS9 at the same time!

Absolutely loving Windows 7 by the way....

If you wanna see my newegg.com order list I'd be happy to provide it for ideas...best of luck!

The answer to the question as you worded it, is that it depends on your budget.
A computer isn't one unit but an assembly of components working together as best they can.
If you have a great processor but poor RAM, the processor won't achieve it's potential.
The trick is to work out the best overall package for your budget.
So you might get a slightly slower processor in order to improve the speed of your RAM and thus the overall performance of your puter.

If you're building yourself you will have a lot of control over these things.

I used to advise folks on the www.buildyourown.org.uk forums.
Though I'm massively out of date now, there is still plenty of useful advice and input from many members who stuck around.
Also, go to Tom's Hardware and look at the Performance reviews there.
They now not only give a performance review but also a percentage comparison to the performance vs cost.
I've found these massively useful for CPU's and GPU's.

For a gaming rig, your main concern should be the GPU and RAM.
Next your CPU, then the motherboard.
Do not under-estimate how important a good and strong power supply is.
Also a case with good air circulation.

If you want a lot of RAM (adviseable for things like FX), go for a 64-bit system and ensure your components are 64-bit.
