M60A3 Unusual Paint Scheme
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M60A3 Unusual Paint Scheme

Hi All,

While working on my ongoing USA AFV Map and GPS update, I came across this unusual paint scheme on the Dover, NJ M60A3.

I grabbed a screen shot of Google Street view here:

It probably sounded like a good idea after a few beers.

I posted this pic on the USABOT (United States Army Brotherhood of Tankers) FB page. Boy did I start something. One guy posted the story behind this tank, and another painted just like it.

Duncan McQueen: I was there when they did that; there were several. The Washington (Rt. 57, Port Murray) Armory also had one; I believe it was every tank Bn HQ in NJ. They wanted to run them in parades, but they couldn't find anyone qualified to drive them (including myself) who was willing to be seen with one. We had 2 M60A3s at Port Murray, the one retaining the original paint job was proudly parked out front and remains there today (needing paint); the one like this was hidden in the maint shop where no one would see it. I can't say how we referred to this "flamboyant" paint job and remain politically correct. The non-combat arms LTC who was in charge of this program was very proud of himself and couldn't see how hideous it was, even when it was pointed out to him by myself and others. Needless to say he was soon retired and never made O6.
