That was news to me, too. I guess the Ford SOHC experience happened just in time to prevent they're wasting any real effort on it. At least FoMoCo got a few of theirs out there.

Actually while opportunity permits I think this is an appropriate time to give a shout-out to Ford for not only getting a few of their original SOHC Cammer engines out there back in the day, but returning to the idea with a vengeance in the modern day. Today's 4.6 3-Valve Mod motor as well as the Coyote 5.0 DOHC have DNA going back to the original idea and I'm pretty proud that they carry on in the tradition, albeit in far smaller displacements. There's a lot being said specifically about the potential of the new 5.0 as builders are just starting to experiment with great results.

Here's the original cammer with one-piece dual timing chain - reported by Car Craft magazine to be around 6 feet in total length (!!!)

Contrasted to the two-chain design in the 4.6L 3V SOHC engines in the '05-'06 'Stangs you and I own(ed).

And the most recent incarnation, the 5.0L DOHC Coyote...

Furthermore due to the valve arrangement aren't these also more or less hemispherical heads? If so it makes the idea of a DOHC 426 Hemi seem more redundant than intimidating.

And apart from the stupid issue with the two-piece spark plugs in the '05 4.6 3V motor that's in my car and has me afraid to ever try to remove the plugs, I'm pretty stoked that today's Mustangs give a nod to the original cammer - and the chain implementation has far more going for it than gears or belts. Wink

That Chrysler Hemi chain is essentially like Harley-Davidson double-row primary (drive) chain. These are 3-4' in length, depending on the number of links and tension:

You will sometimes see these worn as belts.

The Ford chain is smaller and has more sections and is almost identical to UH-1 and AH-1 helicopter rotor chain (used to transfer control from around the angle at the boom/tail over a pulley. Lots of guys wore these as bracelets, including myself....
